"I could imagine some thought the snap sound was the web line snapping when stretched out straight."

I could add that back then I did not knew what the English word "snap" was supposed to mean, other than a sound effect when his web line got a hold on Gwen.

Greg Kirkman: Glad there are someone around with encyclopedic knowledge about the topic. Tried to find the issue where the story was printed, but no need to do that now.

Stephen Churay: That's why I am not too excited about Civil War. Keep bureaucracy away from the superhero comics. The reason that nobody had made a story about these topics before was not because they hadn't been thinking about it. The story will have an ever bigger influence once Captain America: Civil War is released to the theatres. I suspected it was only a matter of time after I saw the ending of the first Avengers movie, where these issues were discussed by reporters and people interviewed on TV after all the damage caused by the battle when they saved New York from an alien invasion.

Man. That Kane/Romita pairing was quite something, wasn't it?

It was amazing Brian. I love Gil's run on ASM. I'm not sure I did
when I first read it, but I came around!

I'm the same way. I couldn't stand his work when I was a kid. Indeed, I actively avoided it! Nowadays, I could stare at it for hours. His stuff amazes me.

Whenever I reread early Spider-Man, I'm surprised by how quickly the
death lf Gwen Stacy comes after Stan Lee stops writing the book.

Yep.

Still, looking at the Kane pencils available online, it's clear that Romita
often did a lot of redrawing to keep characters on-model and/or tweak
the storytelling.

I'd say that final result is a Romita Spider-Man bolstered by Kane's
excellent action dynamics and his more Ditko-esque spider-poses. In
other words, awesome!

Yeah, you can see Conway trying to generate drama by creating a
subplot where Peter thinks that Gwen and Flash Thompson might have
a thing going. After those first few issues, though, it would seem that he
very quickly realized that Peter and Gwen were on the fast track to
marriage, no matter what contrived drama might come their way.

Personally, I love the post-death of Gwen stuff, with Peter slowly
working through his grief and establishing a somewhat uncertain
romance with Mary Jane. Unfortunately, the fanbase (and future
writers) were apparently unable to work through their grief!

Later, after Mary Jane was phased out of the book Roger Stern brought
her back, with the notion that she'd pop in every now and then, as a
sort of romantic wild card for Peter If only things had stayed that way!

I wish, wish, wish I could see Gil's pencils -- actually breakdowns -- for the death of Gwen. Specifically, I'd like to see what he actually drew for the bridge!! In IDW's Gil Kane ARTIT'S EDITION there are whispers of the pencils visible, suggesting he may have actually drawn a simplified version of the Brooklyn Bridge, as seen in the finished version, but that doesn't tell us why it's identified as the George Washington Bridge.

(My latest theory -- the GWB is much taller than the Brooklyn Bridge, and Conway, scripting the pages, may have decided a killer fall might be more likely from there. He scripted it as such, it was lettered, and then Romita gave those pages to his background man who, in something that was not at all uncommon at the time, did not read what he was inking.)

I have the layouts for the issue as side by side
comparisons with the finished pages. Unfortunately they
are too big to post. if there is a way to e-mail them to
you or one of the Mods to forward onto you, you're more
than welcome to them.
