There's a long thread on when people stopped reading X-Men, but I thought it might be fun to have a look at the first issues that grabbed us. (With images!)
The first issue I picked up was #226, at the end of 1987. Middle of a long crossover that was resolving plotlines that had been brewing for several years, with only a handful of characters that I recognized, probably the opposite of reader-friendly...but it hooked me all the same:
How 'bout you?

This is the first issue of the X-Men I remember owning. I eventually ended up with several issues directly preceding this one, but I'm pretty sure those were bought as back issues. I really enjoyed it. The Hellfire Club are a somewhat novel group of super-villains, and the Black King remains a favorite.
My father owned a fairly good run of early X-Men (starting with #8 and extending through the mid 30s), so I was eventually allowed access to those as well.

My first exposure to the all-new, all-different Uncanny X-Men was in UK reprints of Secret Wars (though I'd read some UK annuals with the original X-Men when I was very young -- if memory serves, though this bit is hazy), but the first actual issue of UXM I read was this one:
It was a werid jumping-on point. A guest artist whose style I didn't really dig at the time, and a weird interlude story that according to the cover blurb was supposedly a second part to one I obviously hadn't read.
The next issue with JR Jr art was the one that got me properly involved and I went back and sought out a lot of the JR Jr back issues (well, my brother did most of the buying. My pennies went on the inferior X-Factor).
In that first year or two of collecting comics, this was the only JB issue I picked up (and it was a cracker!)
Most of the JB issues were out of my price range back then, though I did read a lot of them as part of Classic X-Men.

This! I remember it like it was yesterday, too. A childhood friend of mine found it on his father's boat and gave it to me because he knew I liked comics.
Another (not so) small note - this issue was not only my first X-Men experience, but my first John Byrne experience!

You most of you are making me feel old, my first X-Men comic I read was X-Men #8, Jack Kirby and Chic Stone. I was given a bunch of older comics by someone (can't remember who) included Silver Surfer #1.
One of the gems of my collection is a page from that X-Men comic I read.

My first exposure to X-MEN this issue… then it took me awhile to find the issues leading up to this one… but it was well worth the effort!

Uncanny X-Men #195 - also the first comic I bought. My actual copy is signed by Claremont, Romita Jr. and Bill Sienkiewicz (who did the cover.)
I would've been 12 or so.
