Playing the music that interests you is a great motivational tool!

My mom was a pianist, so all her books and music were lying around, which to me was a fascinating puzzle worth solving! Her first book, "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" (the John Thompson method, for those in the know), was the key to decoding music theory and notation. By the time I started taking lessons, I'd already taught myself to read music.

To me, notation makes perfect mathematical sense.

Restarting this thread to mention my teacher now has me on Beatles songs. I have "Here Comes the Sun" down pretty pat, and am embarking on "Hey Jude." Next on the list, "Eleanor Rigby."

Can't go wrong learning the Beatles' songs. The first song I ever learned on my own was "Norwegian Wood" when I was a young man in the 6th grade playing saxophone.

Hey Jude is a nice song to play on the piano -- though it would help if I could sing like McCartney which is, alas, far beyond my reach. For playing entirely on the piano -- i.e. the normally sung melody carried by the right hand -- I think my favourite Beatles song is All You Need Is Love. I find it translates well.

So, JB, any chance of us hearing you play? An audio sample perhaps?
