I was going through my old comics and I came across my copy of COMICS SCENE #8, which featured an article about the upcoming Goodwin/Byrne WOLVERINE run. In it was 2 pieces of preview art, which were colored breakdowns of their first issue together. I don't think that these are in the gallery, so here you go!

I loved Storm in particular - it showed that JB was clearly using current Marc Silvestri X-MEN issues as reference, since he briefly gave her that hairstyle at the time - which was lost once Klaus Janson applied his finishes (editorial decision?). I would love to see more scans breakdowns of this run somehow, if any still exist!

Very cool - thanks for sharing. I am always interested in the comic creation process and wonder why JB was only used for breakdowns for most of this series. I will have to go back and compare but Klaus has such a "loose" style it doesn't seem too different from what was published to me.

••

All of it, actually. And it was a matter of schedules. I was asked to do the job as a favor to the editor, but I could only do breakdowns in the time frame allotted.

Knowing Klaus would be inking, I figured there would be no problem, tho I was surprised to see him use such a slender line and open approach. I guess I was expecting something more like when he inked my pencils on AVENGERS.

Odd to see colored breakdowns.

Those breakdowns are pretty tight!

Any inker would have a blast with them!

Odd to see colored breakdowns.

Especially POOLY colored! Pencils in any form require a deft hand, when colored. Not in evidence here.

Also, look at Storm's right ear in the first panel! Apparently the colorist applied the accursed "When I Hit a Line I STOP" rule!!

For comparison:

I didn't really care for Janson's inks, here. It felt like he was dipping a straight edge razor in ink. This style is perfect on JRjr, however.

There's a B/W breakdown image of the final splash page of this issue in an issue of COMICS INTERVIEW that I have, but I'll have to find it. Can you tell that I was really psyched about his return to Wolverine??

I loved that run but JB did a much better job on Storm's eyes in the breakdowns, KJ lost them.

I agree Vinny, I wasn't a fan of these inks, and I also agree that Janson
is a great a match for JRJr. Otherwise I'm not much of a fan of his
inking for artists other than himself, I don't even like Janson over
Miller's pencils.
At the time I noticed that the last issue of this story looked way better,
even without realizing it was because JB inked himself( I have that
right, don't I?).

I was okay with the inks on the series, but would likely have enjoyed it
more had JB inked himself.

I loved that run. I hadn't gotten into Wolverine until this solo series and dug the raw JB stuff a lot.
