Long story, but if you have an nVidia video card,
don't
install the update. Seems Microsoft doesn't care about
nVidia owners, as the update severely screws up
drivers
and they can't be fixed or re-installed at the moment.

I couldn't change my resolution and it listed default
drivers being used, so I did a web search and found
out
the issue is due to Microsoft. Seems they made Windows
updates automatic now and they conflict with nVidia's
drivers somehow.

*edit* I forgot to mention that after updating to 10,
my computer wouldn't even acknowledge nVidia
Experience (nVidia's control panel/driver updater)
being on my computer and wouldn't let me install it at
all. I downgraded back to 8.1 soon after due to the
resolution I was stuck with giving me a royal
headache. (I couldn't change the resolution at all,
and was stuck with one that made everthing too wide)

I've been hearing some horror stories about W10. Really
glad I made the move to Mac.

not as severe as your problem: i have lost the use of my SD card reader. probably not a problem for many people, but i gave up on USB sticks as my "portable" medium and moved to SD Cards. other minor-ish problems here and there, too (can't minimize some screens)

i'm NOT impressed with windows 10 (start button - hardly!) - i just cannot understand how it got good reviews.

anyways, i hope there's a solution to the SD card issue soon or the "baby" Acer is moving back to XP. (i haven't done anything to the "daddy" Acer, and probably won't for a while.

[btw - this is being typed on my chromebook]

My wife's laptop upgraded without a glitch. Worked perfect after the
final reboot and she signed in.

My backup desktop PC (I've gone mostly Mac in the last two years, but
keep a PC around just because) was a bit more difficult. I shouldn't
have been surprised, I had a heck of a time getting Win 8 running on it.
Installing the AMD catalyst drivers directly from the AMD website
resolved most of those issues.

The reviews I read have warned that this first-release is a bit buggy. I'll probably upgrade in a few months once they've had a change to put in a few more bug fixes.

That said, I kinda like the maligned and little-adopted Windows 8.1.

Nvidia released new drivers a few hours ago, and MSFT updated their update program.  I just updated by main desktop, and it went smoother than any other update I've had.

I believe the free update is for a year.  After that, you'll still get Windows updates.

Thanks for the warning.

This is not by way of a judgement but it always surprises me that people install new software on the day it becomes available. My policy has always been to let others be the "enthusiastic guinea pigs" and be guided by their experiences.

This attitude extends to cars, telephones, television shows, etc.

I loather, loathe, loathe, wasting my time -- especially when due to incompetence that borders on malfeasance. I can well imagine the frustration you experienced.

I'm quite liking it thus far, with the only hiccough being having to
uninstall/re-install Asus Smart Gesture.

My wife wrote a piece about Win10's wifi scariness

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news/windows-10-automatically -grants-home-wi-fi-network-access-to-your-outlook-and-skype- contacts-072915.html

Also, Classic Shell makes the start menu much more customization.

I took the plunge. But then I had Windows 8.1, which I loathe, so my thinking was: "Can't be worse".
