I wonder if that film ANONYMOUS is worth watching. Not many 2-hour films can do justice to certain concepts. Well, I doubt they can.•• I have not seen the film, tho the involvement of Sir Derek Jacobi, himself an anti-Stratfordian, gives it some polish. Still, I wish it had been Merchant Ivory!!

Wow, the stuff about the crest and Shax-sper, just...wow. Mr Byrne, you need to consolidate all these facts into a comic mini-series for me. ;)

I agree that it's a fascinating topic. I won't claim to have any deep knowlegde of Shakespeare other than enjoying the plays, but I find a lot of the questions about the Stratford-man's authorship to be VERY good questions. But we'll probably never get the definite answer. A pity Shakespeare didn't live in a time when being a playwright or an actor was actually a respectable profession. Ibsen had it easier ;-).

Saw this description of ANONYMOUSE on Amazon UK's synopsis:
QUOTE:
But the real story of Anonymous isn't about authorship, it's about machinations to capture the throne of England when Elizabeth (Vanessa Redgrave) dies. |

I'm not really interested in a film where the authorship debate is a sub-plot. May have to wait for cable.

One of the things keeping me far away from ANONYMOUS is the "behind the scenes" doings in the Court.

'Anonymous' is an okay movie, it has a good sense of place and time, and the staging of the plays is well-done, but otherwise -eh- My personal theory is that the 'Shakespeare' plays were written by a number of authors, (how many, is anyone's guess) whose plays were brokered by Will Shakspere who simply slapped his own name on them. The playwright Robert Greene called Shakspere 'an upstart crow' for what Greene thought was boorish behavior on Shakspere's part.

The "upstart crow" reference, which many Stratfordians embrace as a description of Shakespeare as a real, living man, is most unflattering, and does not sound at all like the playwright we've been taught to revere. It DOES fit rather nicely, tho, someone notorious for trying to claim the work of others as his own. Similarly there is the eulogy which calls Shakespeare "our English Terence." Another odd one, given that many scholars believe Terence was just a front man for Roman nobles who wished to be anonymous.

Also, a device used in The Merchant of Venice.

JB, if I were to read one book on the subject, which one would you recommend?

if I were to read one book on the subject, which one would you recommend?•• Depends on how much time you want to invest. The first one I read was THE MYSTERIOUS WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE, by Charlton Ogburn Jr. That's a fairly massive tome, which details all the then-known evidence for DeVere and against the Stratford Man, plus includes a detailed biography of DeVere. A sort of READER'S DIGEST version can be found in SHAKESPEARE, WHO WAS HE? by Richard F. Whalen. I have bought several copies of this one over the years, as I tend to give them to friends who express an interest. Finally, I would recommend SHAKESPEARE'S UNORTHODOX BIOGRAPHY, by Diana Price (not Prince!). She is a lapsed Oxfordian, and offers no candidate for the job, but the book thoroughly demolishes the Stratford mythology. It's another fairly hefty one.
