http://robot6.comicbookresources.com/2015/10/as-fans-mock-fr ank-millers-dark-knight-iii-cover-kurt-busiek-defends-it/

There's been a fair amount of discussion on this piece and some interesting tweets from Kurt Busiek and I was just curious what the members of the board here thought.

I'm a big fan of Frank's work and quite like the piece but I think I'm in a minority on this one!

I'm persuaded by Busiek's comments.  However, I think it is ugly, and I don't like it.  That said, Miller is consistently interesting as a creator, and I'll probably buy it.

First off let me say I'm not a fan of Miller's work. But I can be objective about his art. Thou there have been pieces of art he has done in the past I may have not liked. I have been able to say if it was good or not.  There is nothing good about this drawing unfortunately.  There is no way DC comics would ever publish artwork like that. If it was a no named artist.

I'm not persuaded by Kurt Busiek's comments. The art work looks like it was done by a little kid trying to draw like Miller or Erik Larsen. Frankly speaking that makes Rob Liefeld's anatomy look good.

It's a caricature and I think that's part of Miller's point.  Miller was the guy for me in the 80s on Daredevil and I liked a lot of the early Sin City work but I'm not as interested in Frank's efforts in the past 15 years.  I'll take a look at it in the store but unless it speaks to me there, I don't think I'll be on board this time out.

Busiek's point: it's poorly drawn on purpose? Yeesh.

It may be that Miller misses the gritty rawness of the Golden Age, but nothing here recalls that period of drawing or storytelling.

Tom Wolfe wrote a book noting that there was a point when modern art turned a corner and no piece of art would be deemed "worthy" without an interesting theory to back it up. Modern Art stopped being about the artwork and more about the clash of ideas behind the scenes and that the artwork was more of a by-product than the main matter.

Comic books seem to be heading down the same road.

I've never been a fan of cartoonish or heavily stylized comic art unless it supports the verisimilitude. For instance, I don't like Sam Keith's art or Humberto Ramos' for super heroes. However, I love Sergio Argones on Groo and Stan Sakai on Usagi. For me, once the subject of the art represents some level or realism I feel a heavy, stylistic art detracts too much for my tastes. The image of Superman detracts too much for me. I would expect to see something like that in Not Brand Echh or Mad. It seems better suited for parody.

I can get behind some of Busiek's defense of the art, but there's still
some weird perspective and foreshortening going on that confuse me,
like the angle of his left boot.

It seems in line with the "Frank Miller" we have seen over the past decade-and-a-half. I thought it would be something worse before I clicked on the link. It's not the "Miller" I liked from the 80s, but it's nothing that should have surprised anyone familiar with Miller's work over the years.

BTW, we all know Frank Miller knows anatomy and perspective,  so it's a pretty sure bet that any perspective,  anatomical issues with the art is intentional.

Miller is my favorite artist, so it should be no surprise that I like this
picture. I can easily see how some, probably most, wouldn't like it, but
I'm a fan of funky, weird, what some may call "ugly", art. I don't consider
Miller a mainstream creator so I don't expect his work to reflect
mainstream aesthetics.

I am a fan of Frank,i have a `300` print over my fireplace! But his art in recent years hasn`t been to my taste, call it charicature, but i find it ugly. Also,do we really need to see the outline of what`s in his trunks in that picture?
