Hi Mr. Byrne -

I'm wondering if you could provide some information on a couple of drawings you and Terry Austin were working on at a 1979 NYC Creation Convention.

I've included with this post two photos that my dad took at this convention, with myself looking on as you and Terry worked on some quite detailed X-Men drawings. With a large group of people crowded around your table, I maneuvered my way in to watch as you drew. At the time I was twelve years old and a huge fan of both you and Terry.

For years I always marveled at how involved a convention sketch these drawings seemed to be and wondered what might have happened to them. A number of years ago I came across a copy of The Comics Journal #57 from Summer 1980 and recognized the drawing as the one Terry appears to be inking in my dad's photos! I looked closer at the pencil sketch you're working on and it looks to be the beginning stages of that same drawing. Apparently, though,Terry seems to already be inking said piece. That has me wondering, did you draw two identical pieces at this convention? Or maybe my eyes deceive me and it's an entirely new drawing you're working on. Is the art Terry is inking the actual art that was used for the Comics Journal cover?

I would be most appreciative if you might be able to provide any background on these  photos! Thank you.

And thanks so much for all the amazing art and stories over the years!

Here is the link to my original blog post about these photos in higher res, along with one more photo from a talk/q&a session you had later in the day.

Best-

Justin Leiter

What a great moment to witness! I love that drawing.

Look at Terry-- already knowing somehow that his X-Men pages would grow in value far beyond what people expected!

I wonder if he really anticipated it. Could he see in the passion of these young fans that, someday, the readers would grow sentimental and pay top-dollar for the artwork they loved so much as kids? Looking back, it does seem a little predictable.

Terry rarely sells his pages.

I've had the same thoughts!
I still own this one I got from JB at the November 1978 or 79 Creation Con when I was around 11 :-)

I know it was a November NYC Creation Con. Not sure if it was 1978,1979 or maybe even 1980? I recall he was sitting next to Howie Chaykin when he drew my sketch, not Terry Austin.
Such a great show for a comic fan from that era!

Ah, ok...so likely another show, unless Howard took over Terry's spot at some point. I'm fairly certain that these photos are from a 1979 convention and it could be November as well.

The only time I remember sitting next to Chaykin was at an Atlanta con, very early in my X-Men days.
