That's what I heard too. Same with John Buscema when he was alive, he couldn't careless about super-heroes.

I also think he's not keen on doing a monthly at this point. I
believe he's keeping reasonably busy doing special projects and
such. I could be wrong, but that's the impression I got when I
spoke to him last year.
As much as I love his work, I think his color sense is his Achilles heel. Didn't care for that painted work at all.

I agree with you, Ande. His line and tone are superb, but the color is
oddly flat.
I'm surprised no-one has mentioned "Martian Manhunter - American
Secrets." By far my favorite, and a cracking good story, to boot. Gerard
Jones, I believe.

Man... looking at that Hex pencil piece makes me wish that D.F. Grant had
gotten Lopez for the 5th "Dark Tower" book, instead of Wrightson.

I own the page which immediately precedes that one, with Superman and Lois dining in a rooftop restaurant.
The thing that always struck me as odd about that page is that Superman is on a date with Lois -- as Superman! Where's the whole "I must have a secret identity to protect my loved ones" concept? Not to mention, why wouldn't he throw on a suit and tie (especailly since he expresses concern that everyone is "staring" at them. Well, duh!)
The page, as with the rest of the story, is beautifully drawn, but the underlying concepts point up so much of what was wrong with DC and Superman at the time. |

I always thought that scene was slightly pathetic -- it's like a Derek Jeter wearing his uniform on a date. Give it a rest, Superman!
This goes back to the notion at the time of Superman being *the real identity.* That scene alone demonstrates how bizarre such a concept is. The real identity should be the guy in the suit and tie, the normal clothes, and of course Clark Kent.
Post MOS, Clark Kent wisely wanted Lois to love him for him not because he was Superman (pre-MOS, he sometimes claimed this, but it seemed unreasonable, since Clark was "fake").

Eric, the Newsarama article I've read http://newsarama.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3 0036
has only announced the writing team -- has an interior artist been announced? Frank Quitely will do at least one cover for the ongoing series, and the writers promise that the stories will be done-in-one single issues light on continuity. Since Jose was recently signed to a DC Exclusive contract, I think there's still quite a good chance he'll have some involvement with this book, be it interiors or covers. Have you heard differently?

My personal favorite JLGL work is Atari Force. But really, it's all pretty darn good.
Would love to see him doing the art on the new Jonah Hex book. Even if he can't do every issue (I don't think he can handle the monthly schedule), every issue is supposed to be self contained, so just put him in the rotation.
