Received an email from my old high school announcing a "Black Friday" sale on their various products. Er....?

Canadian Thanksgiving is in October.

Retailers cannot pass up any opportunity to make customers think there is a big sale that they should pay attention to. So "Black Friday" sales have grown in Canada over the last decade or so. My perception is that the discounts are trivial compared to what is seen in the USA.

And Wal-Mart's British subsidiary tried Black Friday a few times, and announced this year they would not bother anymore. Good.

Black Friday as a marketing concept has been exported to more than one country in recent years. Wal-Mart owns Asda in the UK and though they are not doing it this year, they had Black Friday sales last year.

The local shopping centre here has a 'Black Bow' event this weekend. I think the day's position in the calendar makes it a perfect lead into the Christmas shopping season for retailers, as much as anything else.

Give it a decade and we will move our Thanksgiving too.

In here Finland we also have Black Friday sales even we don't even have
Thanksgiving and businesses that have sale aren't American. I'm waiting when
we start having 4th of July fireworks and stuff.

Businesses in Canada are probably fearful that Canadians will rather do their Christmas shopping south of the border to take advantage of sales and the exchange rate. Their line of thought sounds like they'd rather to keep those shoppers close to home

Driving around this lunchtime I saw at least one store with its Black Friday Sale on today (Thursday being the new Friday).

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are now the days in Canada where you will save the most on almost anything. It used to be Boxing Day , but not anymore. If your looking for an Apple Product , buy in the next day or so.

The exchange rate plummeted during the last year due to the drop in crude oil prices. One Canadian dollar is now worth only 77 cents US. So few Canadians will cross the border for US Black Friday deals this year, but we certainly used to do so, and indeed that helped convince Canadian retailers to do their own Black Friday specials to keep customers at home.

I think it is more to due with the television advertising than any other reason. So much of our television programing originates in the USA and Canadians are inundated with the Back Friday sales pitch. It is easy for local merchandisers to ride the wave.

I truly dis-like the approach and will not be supporting Canadian Black Friday in any way.

It's really more of a slightly grey Friday here.

I'll probably buy a software upgrade during the black Friday sale (I can only get the software in the USA).
