In a catalog that landed in my mailbox yesterday I found this:

Of course, my eye scanned automatically for my own work, and I found She-Hulk and Hawkeye. But finding Hawkeye I thought "Hawkeye? Since when am I associated with Hawkeye? Why not Wolverine or one of the FF?"

Then I realized, none of the X-Men and none of the FF are represented here.

There was a time when seeing my work mingled in with all those other folk would have made me beam with pride. Now it just makes me sad.

Hence my thread title.

The House that Mutants Built, now ashamed of them?

I would have lost a considerable amount of money, betting that Wolverine would never be out of Marvel merchandising. Ditto for the Human Torch and the Thing, two easily recognizable trademark characters.

Maybe Marvel can get Image to do Fantastic Four and X-Men comics now...

So, if Marvel had not come to the agreement that they
did with Sony, would they have dared have gone so far as
to leave out Spider-Man?

Spider-Man is not prominently displayed, but you bring up a good point, Trevor. Notice that with the Inhumans movie in development they are represented quite well.

Marvel merchandise reminds me of the special circle of Hell reserved for their execs & Hollywood costume designers.

I always laugh when some fans say that they only buy comic books for the writing, not the art...

but the art keeps generating more and more money with the merchandise, even after the original creators are long gone.

Seems like a Marvel Cinematic (and Television) Universe-centric shirt.

Which makes me think we'll see She-Hulk, Modok, and Spider-Woman in live action form in the next few years...

I think The Inhumans are a brilliant concept (I have since I first "met" them). I only wish they'd been given more of the spotlight based on their own strengths, not as a stand-in for mutants over some legal issues.

But now that they're in the spotlight, they've been tinkered with to the point of being barely recognizable.

...ugh...my head hurts...

When I discovered the Inhumans in FF reprints I was absolutely enamored with Blackbolt. The idea of a leader unable to speak due to his power was fascinating to me. Kirby and Lee were able to make him regal, stoic and devoted with very few written words. Of all the Marvel movies and TV shows due out, The Inhumans has the greatest potential to disappoint me.

Right away I noticed no FF and X-Men before reading JB's comments. Even with all of those characters on the shirt, in a weird way it seems empty without them. I like the idea of the shirt but without them, pass. A all heroes and all villains shirts would have been even more to my liking.

-----

No, because even before that, Marvel retained all merchandising rights
and TV rights to Spider-Man.
