Some of JB's best work was done completely solo:

The Fantastic Four starting with #232
Alpha Flight
The Man of Steel
She Hulk
Namor
Next Men

But some of his collaborations have been just as good:

Stern on Captain America, Avengers, Spider-Man
Claremont on Iron Fist, Star Lord, X-Men, and Marvel Team Up.
Stan Lee on Silver Surfer

Strangely enough, I have not liked it as much when Byrne plots and scripts material with other artists, with the notable exception of the Thing.

I guess, I just deem the other artist "not as good" as Byrne and wonder to myself how much better the art would have been had JB done it!!!

Agreed. The notable exception for me was the TORCH OF LIBERTY SPECIAL
with Kieron Dwyer.

I would have enjoyed GENESIS more if JB had written and drawn it or if
Alan Davis had done the interiors as well as the covers.

I got JB's Spider-Woman run a couple of years ago. It sat unread for months for fear I would be distracted by the art. I must say I fully enjoyed the stories. Sears' art took some getting used to but after a couple of issues I got used it.

My favorite stories that JB wrote but didn't draw are IRON MAN with John Romita Jr, and the premiere of HELLBOY with Mike Mignola.

I always liked that JB gave the artist top billing, even though JB was doing the same writing that the "Marvel Method" writers would do while taking top billing and full "writer" credit, even if they were scripting.

I remember Mike Mignola drew a few pages of NEXT MEN that featured an early appearance of Hellboy, and I was a bit annoyed when I turned the page to see a different artist.  I didn't know who Mignola was, but he won me over in just a few pages.  I would not have tried a book called HELLBOY if it wasn't for JB's endorsement, and I confess the same for Romita Jr.  I had seen Romita Jr.'s work early on, and I thought he only got his shot because of his father.  IRON MAN showed me what an amazing, individual talent Romita Jr is - he is a singular artist beyond family connections.  It seems he got the best of his father's advice, and then grew into his own style.

Byrne's Namor work wasn't done completely solo. After issue 25, Jae Lee took over on the art and JB wrote it. Unless you're just talking about the initial 25 issue run that he did by himself before Jae Lee came along. Personally I enjoyed the book a lot more with Byrne art, although Jae Lee has come a loooong way since his art on that book. Not his love of blacks, but just the art itself, which is beautiful these days and it was pretty rough when he started which is, I'm sure, typical for any rookie artist.

I think Byrne has done a fine job writing and scripting for other artists. As Tim mentioned, his Iron Man run with JR jr. is great and is considered by a lot of fans to be one of the better runs on the book.

And that first Hellboy mini which was scripted by JB and plotted and drawn by Mignola was fantastic.

Another often over-looked mini-series he wrote with Mignola on art was the World of Krypton.

Mignola was another artist who it took me a bit to appreciate. When he and Mantlo took over Alpha Flight I hated it. But by the time he was doing Hellboy I absolutely loved his art.

I've just reread JBs first run on FF with Marv Wolfman, which is an interesting pairing. The story meanders a bit, but the artwork sure looks great (with lush Joe Sinnott inks!

Loved the chemistry between John and Chris Claremont in the
70's. At the time, the MTU stuff blew my mind. It wasn't
until later that their other collaborations clicked with
me.
