An interesting question has bubbled up in my brain as I move deeper into this project. Several of the main characters will belong to a spaceship crew who are, to say the least, diverse. Different kinds of aliens, of course. But also different kinds of humans. For example, an Asian woman as the first mate.

And there's the question. If I leave her hair open, not filled in with black, she's likely to look blonde, and depending on my skills drawing her face, some may miss the point that she is Asian. On the other hand, if I fill in the hair on pages that are otherwise being left open for color, there will be these sort of random blobs of black on otherwise unshaded pages.

This is trickier than I thought!!

"And my fevered brain has already come up with ideas for three more!!"

...

I'm giddy as a schoolgirl about this!
Has this progressed far enough to where paper type has been discussed ? Multi media, old school coloring book,etc.etc.

Here are several compelling reasons to keep the hair open...

In my kids' coloring books, I've seen two strategies-- one is to fill in the blacks and the other is to leave the black hair open for color, but with more shapes inside the hair to indicate where there would be "shine" or reflected highlights. My kids seem to understand both pretty well.

True dat!

However, I remember the furor over the plaque attached to Voyager, on which a fairly generic male and female figure were left as line drawings only, causing some to protest about the "blonde" hair on both.

Maybe I'll shave all the space crew's heads!!!!

(I don't normally care for brightly-colored dye jobs, but... damn.)

As for the color of a character's hair, I would think a color picture of the crew on the cover would tip people off to what color hair they have, etc. And if someone coloring the book still decides to go with a different color it's not because they weren't aware of the intended color.

Assorted answers:

Serious question here: do projects usually happen this quickly? I am, this strikes me as a fast turn around!

Depends entirely on which publisher you're dealing with...

As for other questions -- if IDW is doing this (I have to say "if" so I can pretend this hasn't been officially announced yet...), no ads, no way. Only way I'd want to see a coloring book of ads if it was all the old Hostess Fruit Pie comic-book ads.

And what kind of paper? For those in the know of various paper stocks, it'd be 180gsm -- a nice, uncoated, heavy stock.
