I bought this book off the spinner rack when I was 9 years old and remember thinking the cover looked weird for some reason. I looked at it again when I was older and realized how “off-scale” the Hulk was. One of Iron Man’s clinched fists is about the size of the Hulk’s head.

Must of caught Hulk in mid-transformation - larger than Banner, smaller than Hulk - yeah that must be it...;-)

Pretty easy to understand after I zoomed in on the image.

Maybe the water is really cold, and Hulk is suffering from shrinkage.

Michael, I first read this comic as a kid, too, and have thought the same thing for quite a while.
***SPOILER ALERT***
I also recall being bothered by the fact that Iron Man "beat" the Hulk… even in his own book!

Wallace,
I see that defeat the same way Doc Samson got that one punch ( beautifully rendered by JB) that K.O.'d the Hulk.

JJ, you may be right, but I see that as bit different. The Hulk didn't think Doc Samson was real, so had totally let his guard down. If the Hulk can fight the combined forces of the Avengers (including Iron Man and Thor) and the Fantastic Four to a standstillI, how can Shellhead beat him all by his lonesome? I know Iron Man put all of his energy into one punch, but… but…
Maybe it's just that I was such a big Hulk fan as a kid.

I was a big Bob Layton fan back in the day... yes, he's not perfect, but if I'd seen that on the stands when I was 8 years old, I would have begged my mother to grab me a copy.
And even today, I want to read that issue right now!

I'm going to allow myself one comment on this drawing, since it's an opportunity for a mini art lesson. This is a mistake many artists make -- including yours truly in the early days. They tend to forget that each link is like a donut, and has a fairly consistent thickness all the way around. Each link passes thru the hole in the center of the other, their "edges" do not overlap.

There are aspects of Bob Layton's work that I liked back then and can still appreciate, for sure.
But Iron Man's nipples is not one of them.
