I was looking through the Walt Simonson Thor run, half of
which is drawn by Sal Buscema. I remember people at the LCS
ripping Sal's work, mostly because he's not Walt Simonson.

Looking at it this evening, I'm so impressed with the work
he did. Maybe his human figures don't quite pop like
Walt's, but his giants, witches and creatures have a
quality that Walt just couldn't get. They're more
cartoonish, but they fit that world so perfectly. His
brother Big John could do the same, but even if the style
is similar, the line is completely different.

Then, there is his storytelling. He's such a consume
storyteller. His pages just flow from panel to panel,
almost effortlessly. Which usually means, a lot of thought
of work went into the work.

I don't know if he has ever gotten the respect he deserves,
but he really is a master of the craft.

I agree,Sal and Walt`s art were perfect for Thor and complimented each other`s styles.

I LOVE Sal !

He was always great with layouts--there was always a great vitality to his action scenes and even when people were just walking and talking!

One of the most fun things about Sal's style the whole time I was growing up was that it was good and effective with simpler/plainer inkers like Mike Esposito or Vince Colletta, but then it was a great foundation for more complex or moodier inkers like Klaus Janson and Bob McLeod.

However, I liked his pencils a lot better than his inks (or self-inks) and it's somewhat curious to me to read that he always wanted to be an inker!  He started off inking his brother's pencils on SILVER SURFER and in recent years (the last twenty years?) mostly did just inking on other's pencils.

But his Captain America will always be THE Cap to me!  And I wish they'd reprint all his Hulk stuff too already!

Big big fan of sale. The he did for Thor, PPTSSM, and especially on the
Balder Mini was top notch!
My first experience with the New Xmen was the MTU Annual he drew.

A new favorite word on the internet is "underrated," usually applied to someone who is anything but. In Sal's case, it's a perfect description.

Solid as a rock!
He was doing so many titles when I first started reading comics in the mid 70's. Even the titles he wasn't on, you still got to see his work in those Hostess ads at the end of the books.

Some of what I like about Ron Frenz's work likely comes from Mr. Buscema's
inks.
