Yes, it does seem to pave a way for another Scottish referendum, with the Scottish clearly in favour of being part of the EU.

For as long as I can remember, Britons have been hostile toward the notion of belonging to somebody else's club. Delusions of Empire still lurking in the folds of those British brains.

What concerns me, on this side of the Pond, is how the Stock Market will respond. Those avaricious cowards tend to dive for cover at the least ripple in world affairs, dragging market values into the gutter.

A curious point in all this: I was watching BBC News yesterday (when I went to bed last night, "stay" was in the lead), and one of the commentators stated that the Government would not actually have to act on the vote, whichever way it went. This seems at odds with the Prime Minister resigning!

The referendum itself isn't legally binding. The recent referendums on electoral reform and Scottish independence both had specific legal outcomes built into the bills that enabled the referendum in the first place. This one doesn't — it could have included a specific requirement to invoke Article 50 (which is the mechanism by which the UK leaves the EU) but it didn't.

It's very likely that Article 50 will require a parliamentary vote, which could be interesting.

As for Call-Me-Dave resigning… that's because this referendum was only ever about Cameron trying to control the Euro-sceptic right of his own party. The idea was: call a referendum, win it, shut the Euro-sceptics up for a decade. Didn't work out so well for him, hence the resignation.

Just a shame that the rest of us have to pay the price for his political incompetence.

The whole thing reminds me of that scene from Yes, Minister:

TOP GEAR did a segment saluting the Jaguar E-Type on its fiftieth anniversary. Jeremey Clarkson referred to it as the last great thing Britain made, and summed it up by saying it "reminds us of a time when we really were as great as we still think we are."

That's an underlying current in the land of my birth, and one that leads to this kind of foolishness.

I predicted Brexit a few weeks back on here and it's come to pass. This will destroy this country and I am deeply ashamed today.

Sadly in the same post I also predicted Boris as PM (which now looks likely) and then Trump as POTUS. I really hope I'm wrong otherwise we are all FUCKED.

Bill Colins: The sad murder of MP Jo Cox last week, was even used to try and link the leave campaign to far right groups, when it was a lone guy with severe mental health issues, such dirty tricks are so low.
------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------
There is a direct link. The far-right (mainly UKIP and Nigel Farrage) have been stoking anti-immigration feeling for years now. This preys on people's insecurities. Far easier to blame anyone non-white or non-British for all your problems. Farrage then has the gaul to say this 'battle' was won without a bullet being fired. Dangerous prick.

I've spent this week trying to get leave voters to wake up by posing them the following question:
Would you like to wake up on Friday to Boris Johnson as PM and the pound in freefall?
No they say

Then vote remain.

Over 60% of the people where I live voted to leave. And the idiot Farage suddenly comes out saying he lied about the money (shocked, I tell you, shocked!) and that no one will be sent back home, in fact, immigration will probably remain as is (for the sake of clarity, immigration is not an issue to me along the lines that it is to the idiot Farage). .

So, other than wrecking our country, what has that idiot actually achieved?

There's a whiff of something undemocratic about it.

In a democracy, if you vote someone in on a false campaign promise you can oust them.

With this, where the repercussions of the vote seem irreversible, it seems wrong that immediately they are admitting their campaign promises were bollocks.

And the S&P 500 has just had the worst opening in 30 years...
