Snipers kill five police officers in Dallas, wound seven others during protest

Is it too dramatic to call our nation hopeless?  After the killings of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, I thought maybe, just maybe, we might be at a turning point. There was objective video making it clear that these murders were not justified use of deadly force. Maybe people on the fence might start to realize that we have a significant racism problem in our country. Then, four (or more) idiot murderers shoot and kill five cops during a peaceful protest and declare defiantly that they wanted to kill white people, especially cops. So much for reaching anyone who might have been on the fence. Is there any hope to be had?

Jeremy, I'd like to add this to what you wrote. The shooter who said he wanted to kill the cops said he was mad about the cop shooting and was mad by Black Lives Matter.

Hope for what?

Not being snarky, but I really need a better context to understand your point. These acts are distressing and race motivated. But we are a nation of hundreds of millions and the idea of giving up hope seems premature. What hope should these acts make me give up?

As Tom Wolf noted in BONFIRE OF THE VANITIES, if a Black man is killed by the police he is automatically canonized by the media and the Black Community. It may take years to sort out what really happened. And, should the police shooting be found to be justified, we can expect more unrest and even death.

This illustrates the terrible burden born by virtually every Black person in this country. When White Christans state their whining about being "beleaguered" they should look to cases like this to learn what that really feels like.

"Can't we just get along?" No. Not as long as there are guns and people eager to use them.

I read a post on Facebook saying we are too divided and need to unite "under god". People don't even realize how divisive they're being when they call for unity. "If everyone would just agree with me, there would be no hate!"

We have witnessed the murder of men, women and children in movie theatres, the murder of kindergartners in their own school rooms, the murder of gay people in a nightclub, and now the murder of police officers... and yet, again, NOTHING will be done.

The news gets more depressing…. this is a sad future for our society.

Right on the heels of Independence Day.

It's been awful. I can't imagine what it feels like to be a Dallas cop or Dallas resident right now.
