And, of course, books like ALPHA FLIGHT didn't help -- there the model was the Avengers, but none of the characters had their own titles.

Which of course you brilliantly subverted by making each issue, or at least the early ones, feel like an issue of that character's own title.

Other than Michel Fiffe's self-published COPRA, I can't think of any other title that has done that (for any duration - the Hawkeye / Ant-Man team-up springs to mind in Avengers 223 but that was a one-off).

Marvel is doing a new Champions series, with a bunch of characters just thrown together. Its going to have the Amadeus Cho Hulk, Miles Morales Spider-Man, new black teen girl Iron Man, new Ms. Marvel, the Vision's daughter (WTH?!), the new Nova (I don't care enough to know his real name), and time displaced teen Cyclops on it.

Ugh.

Are any of those characters at a loose end at the moment? (I don't really follow much modern Marvel so am unaware of what is happening).

I thought that Marvel were no longer able to publish a title called The Champions? Several years back, The Order was originally intended to be called exactly that but they had lost ownership to another publisher - I seem to recall a RPG link.

They let the trademark lapse, and a company that publishes pen and paper RPGs snatched up the rights. From what I understand, a deal was made that allows both companies to use the name.

Cannot imagine how anyone could trademark a pre-existing word like "champions." A distinctive logo, yes, but the word?

I thought the Order spun out of the Defenders, no?

There were two different groups called The Order, Ted.
