Terry Austin alerted me to this. He swears he did not ink it, and I have no memory of penciling it. Do any of you have any info on its history?

From first glance, it doesn't look clean enough to be inked by Terry Austin.  Upon further inspection, either the whole thing is a fake, or just the inking is fake.  But if you don't remember ever penciling it, I'd call it fake.  I don't remember ever seeing this image before now, and that instantly makes me think it's fake.

The Prof's face looks odd. As does Cyclops's pose. It looks like an art project someone did in Byrne/Austin style to me. Though I will say I'm not an expert, and it could be genuine. But look at Cyclops's left ankle. It looks wrong.

Yeah Cyclops is a little wonky.
Maybe the use of the "skinny" visor is some kind of clue.

Thanks, guys, but I am not looking for speculation. I'm hoping someone has actually seen this piece and can provide so background. I don't want to cry FRAUD until I'm sure.

Does the signature under Terry's say Rob Berry?

The main thing that stands out to me is Cyclops' pre-GSXM visor. You did say in the past that you were planning on slowly getting him back to the original visor.

Yes, he's mentioned in the description to the left of the piece.

I found this on Pinterest--
--and it says "Saved from Giant Size Marvel"...which apparently got it from the cover of THE COMICS JOURNAL #57, also from 1980.

The elements are so similar that I have to think there's a connection.  (The position of each character, Nightcrawler's pose especially, Colossus' foot, maybe some other things.)  A good artist could conceivably do an "homage" (or forgery!) looking at this one and end up with the piece in question.  BUT is it possible the piece for sale was maybe a first attempt that was rejected by the magazine?  (Does JB get rejected?)   And it's so close to the one that was used that JB and Austin just don't remember the first try?

Or maybe somebody found a preliminary sketch by JB for that cover and inked it, and Austin's signature (which looks very iffy) was added later?

I know nothing of the piece, but I've bought a couple of things from this group before. You may want to contact them for how they came about it and any other info they have. They've been really helpful and supportive in the past, as well as have been really professional. If there's something off about this piece then I'm sure they'd want to know right away as well.

I know you don't want speculation, but there is no way you drew the head in the background.

There's not a single stroke on that entire page that looks like Terry Austin did it. If you compare his signature to the one on the image Eric's posted upthread, it's clearly not his signature, either.
