The composition of having a mostly covered Xavier face looming behind the charging heroes is completely unlike anything JB has ever done. I didn't bother looking past that aspect to fuel my skepticism. I think Terry vehemently denying he inked the piece is good enough for me though.

I just emailed the dealer and asked for more info on the piece.

Some of the poses feel a bit familiar... but who knows! Inking doesn't look like Austin to my eye...

Nice catch on the Angel, Nathan! I knew that pose looked familiar! I bet if enough digging is done, you'll find close matches for all the figures, if not exact. The drawings are very Byrne-like, but they are simply not the work of JB, himself. And let's toss out the nonsense that Austin ever touched that drawing. There definitely is nothing there in that regard.

Interesting, but inconclusive. I've often duplicated poses, usually unconsciously.

For a magazine like THE COMICS JOURNAL, would you have done a few sketches before one was settled on?  And could those sketches physically end up in someone's hands there and never be returned to you?

The Nightcrawler figure looks like a botched copy of the one Nathan posted, with the "artist" not understanding the pose, drawing part of the background where the body should be. Also, the costume on Wolverine looks like it was badly drawn onto a figure originally portraying the old outfit.

Terry reports the piece has now been taken down.

I can't add anything about the piece, but
kudos to you and Terry for making sure a
buyer is getting what he's paying for.
Especially when artists don't see a red
cent off secondary sales of original art.

Quite enjoyed this thread. It's like a tantalising mystery. And a good excuse to riffle through a lot of old JB art!

...both artists were at their prime and not at their first steps...

Terry and I would both dispute that! Courteously, of course.

dont mind to dispute but tell  me really, since Nathan put this
very comprehensive collage that you would draw professors face like that
in the right since you have drawn him so nicely in the left many many many issues before!Anyway no reason to explain anything so obvious and since it went down that resolves anything!
