Sometimes I think about Roswell and wonder, if an alien ship really
did crash, how long did it take for them to get here? And if they sent
a mayday, how long will it take help to come, after that signal makes
it back?

Don't invoke Roswell, please. Not even metaphorically. When you do, you invoke the idiocy of too much of the human race. Not something we want in a thread celebrating our occasional brilliance.

Good point, and noted.

How far could a craft have traveled since a launch in the 70s?

This page tells you where the voyager probes are in realtime!

And to put another interstellar term into perspective, the voyager probes have so far traveled .002 light years from earth. A light year is quite an unfathomable distance and light speed it equally so mind boggling.

••

I've many a time tried to explain the vastness of the universe to kids. The fact that even at the speed of light our own Sun is nine minutes away. It's difficult to grasp, even for an adult mind.

(A while back I was introduced to this VIDEO, which shows a trip thru the Solar System at the speed of light. I was made aware of how SLOW the speed of light is, given the distances involved. And I also was surprised to realize that when STAR TREK showed the Enterprise moving so "slowly" at Warp One, it was actually accurate. Accidentally, I am sure, but still. . . )

That video is very cool. I have seen others like it, but traveling 45 minutes at the speed of light is fascinating.

Wow....after watching 9 minutes of that video, I've realized how slow light speed is.

Here is another video that says from the POV of light, all things are in the same spot, so the time light takes to travel, from its POV is instantaneous. Freaky.

So we could have Star Trek with Lightspeed ships making trips all through the universe, but they would have to effectively leave Earth behind since the time distortion is so vast, if they made a multi-billion LY jump, could be Earth would be gone completely by the time they came back.

<Dr. Smith> Oh the pain...the pain.

I know that the sun is big, I've seen stats on its size here and there,
but seeing it get so small so slow shows how massive it really is.

The video illustrates just how far apart everything is in space. Travelling at light speed seems slow in relation to the heavenly bodies, but that is because they are so far apart.

Don't forget your D. Adams, "Space is big. You just won't believe how vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly big it is. I mean, you may think it's a long way down the road to the chemist's, but that's just peanuts to space."

Rather than a new topic, I thought I'd put this in here:
