If you were to reflect on the particular Neal Adams art which once made you want to draw like him, are there any particular pages or images that come to mind or which motivated you the most in that direction?

I discovered Neal Adams a couple of years after the rest of the world did thru, in order, his Seventies work on X-MEN, AVENGERS and Batman. The first two I picked up as back issues, but much of his Batman work I bought off the spinner rack in a convenience store across the street from my old high school. By this time I was struggling thru Art College and feeling very much crushed by what I was seeing in Neal's work.

It is still astounding to me that, after so much ground had been stomped down by the greats of the 40's through the 60's--(Eisner, Kirby, Kubert, Ditko the E.C. stable of artists, and on and on) --that someone young and new could come along and effect so much of the industry the way Neal Adams did.
It's hard to imagine how comics would have been without him. If Neal Adams hadn't existed, someone would have had to invent him!

Does it help, JB, to know that you're a much better writer than Neal?
I always tell people that Neal Adams is my favorite artist and that John Byrne is my favorite writer/artist.

Some other comic artists are equally as good as Neal Adams, but I don't think we have seen anyone better than Neal yet. That s a very long time to have been king of the hill.

Certainly think it can be argued that John Byrne, John Buscema, Alan Davis, Ross Andru, Jim Aparo and Rob Liefeld :) are better than Neal Adams.

I discovered Neal Adams because of this cover - long live the hairy-chested Batman.

Covers are symbolic. This scene never happens in the comic, so I'm not bothered by the "errror."

In any case, I smell editorial meddling. I'd bet a nickel Neal drew Ra's holding just the shirt and the cape, or drew hair on Batman's leg.
