The follow-on to the SPACE BATTLESHIP YAMATO 2199 anime series will debut in February 2017 as the first of 7 theatrical movies (with DVD/Blu-Ray and digital releases following).

For those who remember the 2nd Season of STAR BLAZERS, this will be a retelling of the war against the Comet Empire:

Any word if there's going to be Blu-Ray box sets of 2199 available at a non-insane price?  It's like they don't want people to buy them...

Conrad, there will be a collected box set of the Y2199 Blu-Rays released in 2017, with all the extras (and some new ones).

Hopefully the Blu-rays will have English subtitles like 2199 did. If so, the timing on this is good as it will start coming out at about the time Macross Delta ends.

Here's an interesting, if troubling thought about 2202...

In the 2nd Season of STAR BLAZERS, Prince Zordar of The Comet Empire set his sights on Earth because it somehow managed to restore itself after being devastated by the Gamilon Planet Bombs (he didn't seem aware of Iscandar being responsible for that).

INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
In 2199, Captain Okita makes an agreement with both Iscandar and the Great Garmillas Empire never to use the Wave Motion Gun again, in order to get the Cosmo Reverse System to restore Earth

In 2202, the Earth Government is on a crash-building program to create a new Wave Motion Gun equipped star-fleet.

After the events of the VOYAGE OF THE CELESTRIAL ARK movie, what if the Comet Empire / Gatlantis is now coming to Earth in 2202, because it now sees us as the sole source of Wave Motion Gun Tech?

A new 60 second trailer for the first theatrical movie was released not too long ago:

Anime News Network Link

Big differences from the original 1978 2nd Series involving the war against the Comet Empire, with the Earth and Great Garmillas Empire as allies from the start, a number of Andromeda-class ships ready for launch, and Gatlantis forces deploying a 2nd "Magna-Flame-Gun" ship prototype (introduced in the CELESTRIAL ARK movie) in an early battle against the combined Earth/Garmillas fleet.

Very nice! sensory overload like all the 2199 trailers!
I'm looking forward to this a lot. I don't know the season 2 plot at all so absolutely everything will be a nice surprise!

Conrad asked about cheap Blu-Ray which made me thing of the Stablazers and that site hasn't been updated since 2014.

CELESTRIAL ARK ? Oh my!

Bill Mimbu! Thanks for that tip about CELESTRAIL ARK, it was fantastic! Everything that makes Yamato so compelling is on display

Also excited for more Macross in 2018!

And with the first movie ready to debut on Feb 25th...

Final Trailer

A lot of callbacks to the 1978 theatrical movie, especially the use of the end credits song.

Given that the character designs for the Gatlantis (Comet Empire) cast also references the 1978 movie, and not the 2nd TV series that most people remember, one can speculate if that will be the plot direction for Y2202 as well.

Holy crap, those ships look good.  NPR rendered CG models that are spectacularly faithful to the old show.  Love it.  2199 was text-book example of how a remake can be done with deep respect for the source material yet bringing something new to the table.

Appreciated if someone posts any news on when those box sets are washing up on the beach in the US.

Interesting that they included "Star Blazers" in the title treatment near the end. I've got my preorder in and still got my fingers crossed for English subs.

It has been speculated that the use of the "Star Blazers" English dub title might be a way of making the series more marketable in places where the name "Space Battleship Yamato" might encounter difficulties...

Amazon.jp is great as well. Unless you don't like amazon in general. $252.5

It's a great time to buy. The Yen is really weak. 112 yen to the Dollar.

Looking at the final trailer again...

Uh,oh... I think the Big Bad from the CELESTRIAL ARK movie survived the final battle against the Yamato...

They kinda overused that iconic pipe organ piece on the CELESTRIAL ARK movie trailers, so I'm guessing they went for the 1978 nostalgia this time out with that movie end credits song.

And, they already used the "Disco Comet Empire" music for Episode 11 of Y2199 (needs more cowbell).

The official YAMATO 2202 website did a big update, now that the premiere is on approach...

More entries in the Character and Ship database:

Y2202 Character Mechanic Link

First official looks at the Andromeda-Class ships Aldebaran and Achilles, and the "battle-carriers" 'Apollo Norm' and Antares. Also returning are the Gatlantis ships from the CELESTRIAL ARK movie, as well as revamps of the classic designs from 1978 movie.

Really not digging the Apollo and Antares.  That "hat" on the citadel...  :/

Otherwise, the Andromeda class ships are looking splendid.  I really like the paint on the Aldebaran!

Cue the Evil Pipe Organ music...

EDIT - Bandai just released a longer version without the edit at the beginning:

Official 12 minute preview of the movie

And Earth breaks the agreement with Iscandar in a big way...

Ahhhhh.... it just isn't the Comet Empire without the organ music.

A few reports trickling in from Japan indicates that the "theater-exclusive" 2-episode Blu-Ray that just went on sale today, does not have English Subtitles, unlike the Y2199 ones.

Unlikely that the general release version will have them as well...

EDIT - Bandai confirms to Anime News Network that the Home Release will not have subtitles:

ANN Link

Begs the question, why even use the "Star Blazers" title at this point, unless there are future plans for a States-side release...

This will take the fan-subbers some extra time to do then.

The Star Blazers.com hasn't been updated since 2014 so I think an official English version is dead.

Probably Malasia BDs will become popular.

The official Y2202 website has released the poster image and new photos from Chapter 2, which is being released in June:

Yamato 2202 Website

Nice to see "Sgt. Knox" making his official debut in the remake of Season 2.
