According to Diamond, the number of issues
sold in July reached an almost 20 year
high. Now, like television, this is
spread out over a huge amount of product.
So, the number of issues per title aren't
going to be where they were 20 years ago.
That said, I saw this article at Beeping
Cool and almost lost my mind.

Link

Now, the part that made me shake my head
is the twitter post from Nick Spencer.
While he makes a good point about dropping
10 spots on the chart, I think he's
missing the point. IMO, despite the number
of books per title being down, if you are
writing a top tier Marvel character, who
happens to have the highest grossing movie
of the year and can only push out 30,000
copies per issue, there is a serious
problem. Am I wrong? Am I missing
something or has Marvel's expectations
really dropped THAT low?

Diminishing returns and reduced expectations have been s.o.p. for decades, I'm afraid.

I quit all my Marvel comics after that "Hail Hydra" thing.  I seem to recall reading that sales for the long-awaited return of Steve Rogers as Captain America sold 100,000 copies.  If it dropped to 30,000 this quickly, here's a thought--maybe stay away from stupid things like "Hail Hydra" that tick people off.

Marvel also cancelled Fantastic Four, which was selling around 30k, due to "low sales". I wonder why the same logic doesn't apply to a Captain America comic.

Looking online, the most recent sales charts show Cap selling 49K. It's possible Spencer just threw out a general number.

(Not that 49K is a huge number, but it's not what his Cap book is selling either.)

I read his post as well. My immediate thought was 'perhaps if they returned all the original versions rather than replacing EVERY SINGLE CHARACTER with a female version, things wouldn't be so bad.

I'm not decrying female characters, but not every character needs a female equivalent, just as not every female character needs a male equivalent. We currently have female Spider-Man (actually, we have three female Spider-Men), female Iron Man, female Thor, female Hawkeye, female Wolverine

And that's just from the top of my head without thinking. What's going on?

Creative bankruptcy?

Or was that a rhetorical question?

I think he's talking about the Sam Wilson Captain America book (yes, there are two Captain Americas right now) that he's also writing.

When Chris and I were doing X-MEN the book was lucky to get over 150,000 units per month, and was always just a step ahead of cancelation. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN, meanwhile, was averaging around 400,000.

Ahh, the Direct Sales Market has done SO much good for the comicbook industry, hasnt it?
