Rewatched some clips this morning; this must be one of the worst debate performances of all time.  Trump came across as unprepared and intellectually lazy; petulant, easily goaded and self-aggrandizing; and shockingly dishonest.  His ability to tell bald-faced lies is unparalleled.

Yet I doubt it will swing the polls very much.  None of those qualities are newly revealed; Trump has been all of the above from day one.

I didn't see much of the debate (ok, I saw 2 minutes...), but what I did see was like a bad SNL skit with a bad actor portraying Trump.

I would not trust him to keep his temper at the negotiating table.

TRUMP: You know, Hillary is hitting me with tremendous commercials. Some of it’s said in entertainment. Some of it’s said — somebody who’s been very vicious to me, Rosie O’Donnell, I said very tough things to her, and I think everybody would agree that she deserves it and nobody feels sorry for her. But you want to know the truth? I was going to say something...

HOLT: Please very quickly.

...extremely rough to Hillary, to her family, and I said to myself, “I can’t do it. I just can’t do it. It’s inappropriate. It’s not nice.” But she spent hundreds of millions of dollars on negative ads on me, many of which are absolutely untrue. They’re untrue. And they’re misrepresentations. And I will tell you this, Lester: It’s not nice. And I don’t deserve that.

So, Trump was aiming low, at the very end, hinting at Bill Clinton's serial infidelities. Harbinger?

I didn't watch. I could not imagine either candidate would surprise me.

You didn't miss much, JB. Neither candidate said anything of substance. Trump just said nothing faster.

I am in the field of psychology and am still left
scratching my head at understandable theory applied and
coming into reality here. I "get" it, but it truly hurts my
head. Yesterday, was another glaring example as someone
defending Trump as "speaking what he believes" has
convinced herself that he is not playing the role of
politician and actually used the metaphor of clowns. She
posited that Trump was a good clown, like Ronald McDonald,
and Clinton was a bad clown. My only response, besides
"wow", was to wonder why anyone would knowingly and happily
vote for a clown.

Hi!

In Argentina we've been receiving the following input for some months now:
- Both candidates are very close to win the election
- Most of the people in US (and the rest of the world) express and believe that Trump is crazy and full of nonsense (including a lot of known celebrities)

So, can anyone explain me how both candidates are close to win the election? If Trump is so disliked... how can he even compete with his adversary? Shouldn't this be an easy win for Clinton? What context/information are we missing?

Simple Ariel. Trump is NOT disliked by "most people." In fact, he has a shocking (and disturbing) number of followers.

Ariel - Here are my thoughts on why what should have been an easy victory is currently so close in the polls:

- There are a lot of Americans who hate the Clintons (Hillary and Bill). The thought of Hillary becoming president is a nightmare to them.
- Hillary is failing to communicate a positive vision of what she would do to improve America. A candidate for president should be promising 3 or 4 big positive things they would do if they ran the country. Trump's supporters can at least point to the big things he has promised (they may be unrealistic, but that is not the point)
- Although Trump lies more frequently, Hillary has been caught in lots of lies herself. Neither candidate is trust worthy.

It is an election where both candidates have major flaws.

I reckon he just chose many words at random from a dictionary and threw them together. Odds are occasionally you'll come up with a coherent sentence, which he did (but not much).

Learnt a thing or two, anyway. Most insightful. Did you know Trump has built some great hotels?

Robbie -- the BEST hotels.  They are tremendous.  Very, very, great hotels.

I honestly cannot vote for either of these candidates.  I live in Texas so it doesn't really matter which way I vote.  Trump is going to win Texas in a landslide.  I keep thinking that if either party had any other candidate, this wouldn't even be a contest.
