Watchmen by Alan Moore & Dave GibbonsV for Vendetta by Moore & David Lloyd Silver Surfer one-shot by Stan Lee, JB, & Tom Palmer Silver Surfer: Parable by Lee & Moebius Spider-Man Annuals by Denny O'Neil & Frank Miller Wolverine mini-series by Claremont & Miller Micronauts by Bill Mantlo & Michael Golden Mister X by Dean Motter Love & Rockets by Jaime & Gilbert Hernandez Superman 423 & Action Comics 583: "Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?" by Moore, Curt Swan, George Perez, & Dave Hunt Superman Annual 11: For the Man Who Has Everything by Moore & Gibbons Amazing Spider-Man 248: "The Kid Who Collects Spider-Man" by Roger Stern & Ron Frenz Tales of the Batman: Alan Brennert- A recent HB collecting most of the stories written by Brennert for DC, including "To Kill a Legend" and "The Autobiography of Bruce Wayne," with exceptional art by Dick Giordano, Jim Aparo, Joe Staton, George Freeman, and others.
Some lesser known titles and issues that I often recommend:
Atari Force by Gerry Conway & Jose Garcia Lopez. Lopez is without a doubt one of the finest artists in the field and he gets to cut loose on this title with character designs and tech. Also worth looking into: the Cinder & Ashe mini-series by Conway & Lopez. Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld by Dan Mishkin, Gary Cohn, & Ernie Colon. If you can get past the My Little Pony-ishness of the concept, Colon's art and the story are rewarding. Colon's art was also brilliant on the series Arak, Son of Thunder by Roy & Dann Thomas, with inks often done by Tony DeZuniga. Superman Annual 9: "Villain, Villain, Who's Got the Villain?" by Eliot S! Maggin, Alex Toth, & Terry Austin. Alex Toth, one of the World's Finest comics artists on the Worlds Finest team. Come on, watch Batman rescue a kid's balloon. I promise it won't kill you. Also in this issue: "I Flew With Superman" by Maggin & Swan. Curt Swan, Superman's chief artist for many years, falls asleep at his drawing board and... Green Lantern 171: "Shelflife" by "Noel Naive" and art by Alex Toth. Hanna Barbera TV Stars 3: A Herculoids story by Mark Evanier, Will Meugniot, & Dave Stevens (!) and a Space Ghost story by Evanier & Toth. I'm also a big fan of the series What If? Almost anything from the first 30 issues is worth reading. Issue 34 is the humor issue which is sort of fun in its way. And if you like humor, there's also Fred Hembeck's Fantastic Four Roast and Keith Giffen & Robert Loren Fleming's Ambush Bug mini-series to consider.
