Does Marvel or DC have a policy/formula on how much they pay comic creators to use characters in TV or movies? Or do they just write checks for arbitrary amounts?
And are these just "feel good" courtesy checks, or do the creators need to sign anything saying they acknowledge this is the only compensation they expect for use of their character(s)? Since JB got a check and doesn't even know what it relates to, I assume the answer must be no.

In fact, I have over the years signed a pretty thick sheaf of "New Character Agreements." These detail the particular characters, and when and where they were created. Marvel even had me sign some more, recently, to be sure everything was covered.* (I sense Disney in this, wanting to make sure everything is properly accounted for.) ––––––––––––––– * As I signed them, I could not help but remember Marv Wolfman testifying under oath that I do not create characters.

Received yesterday an email notification of a royalty check from Marvel that's on it's way. A small one, this time, but once again an example of the "free money" to which I did not give a whole lot of thought when originally producing the work.A reminder of how much the industry has changed since I started at Marvel with a flat page rate, lo these many years ago! I remember being perfectly content to work on a third or fourth tier book like IRON FIST, because the excitement came from doing the work, not making the money. Over the decades that changed, and the lure was all about working on the highest paying books -- something that was not an issue when the page rate was the same no matter what the title!* ______________________ * Once upon a time Jim Shooter called me up to inform me I was getting a raise, and that I would then have the highest page rate at Marvel. "Except for John Buscema." "Huh?" I asked. "Buscema has it in his contract that he gets the highest page rate. Whatever you get, he'll always get more." "Fine," I said, "he's worth every penny. But don't tell me I'm getting the highest page rate when there will always be a rate higher than mine!"

I wonder if Big John still had that in his contract during the 90s boom and they were paying him more money than Jim Lee, Todd McFarlane, etc.

When the "boom" happened it was all about royalties, not page rates.

Jim Starlin has apparently just said he has received a cheque for KGBeast use that is greater than Marvel paid for Thanos, Gamora and Drax combined. Appears DC are good payers.

That article has a link at the bottom that links to another credit story - X-Men Apocalyse didn't say thanks to Louise Simonson. No fair!

Having started in The Biz, and worked for around ten years with a page rate but no royalties, no "extras" I ever expected to see, I've pretty much felt all along that royalties for past work is Free Money.

Very healthy attitude to have JB. Do you have a favourite original character that you created at the Big Two?
