The character of Luke Skywalker really took a hit in this film.

To me he was written completely out of character, as to what we saw in the original trilogy. He saw a spark of good in Vader and was willing to bet his life on that. And Vader was at that point the most evil character in the galaxy other than Palpatine.

Yet we learn in The Last Jedi that he was willing to murder, Ben Solo in his sleep. Which is really a low act, he felt no good in Ben ... when Ben/Kylo was talking about his inner conflict to Han Solo! And it was also on display in The Last Jedi.

After attempting to murder his nephew, Luke goes into hiding/exile. Removes himself from a new conflict, where if he participated he could have prevented the destruction of several worlds and the new Republic.

Not sure I'll watch this movie again at the cinema. Actually this makes Attack of the Clones look very good. And I never thought I'd say that. What they did to Luke. Horrific is the word that comes to my mind.

I said this yesterday and I couldn't believe I said it as I have been quite vocal about people who would not let go of the old EU.

But ... I prefer the old EU now. At least there Luke got married, had a child and created a legacy for the Jedi. He had tragedy but he had good as well. I want that Luke back please

I liked the movie enough. I felt it was too long and I did feel that Luke was out of character for much of it. I enjoyed the action and am looking forward to progressing the stories of Rey, Poe, and Finn.

Initial reaction was that I loved it! There was so much to it that I’ve got
to digest it a little. Taking the kids next week.

Any “Empire Strikes Back Again” is completely misplaced.

I will also say that I have faith in Johnson to launch a new trilogy, but I
can see why Mark Hamill had a problem with Luke’s story.

Not sure what movie you were watching. I just got back. Walked through the Galaxy Casino in Macau sniffling like a baby. The symbolic ending completely crushed me. Since the age of 10 I have been a Luke man. Han Solo always left me cold. The last scene with Luke was inspired.

Lots of character development that I liked, but a really weak story.  My wife and I left feeling disappointed.  Maybe if they removed all the parts with Finn and Rose (which had zero impact on the story, when all was said and done; they burned up a lot of screen time for a mission that went absolutely nowhere) and improved the dialogue in Luke's bits, and maybe if so many new characters weren't complete ciphers...  then I would have liked it a lot better.

Somebody tell me why Laura Dern kept her plan a secret from everyone else?  Was she just trying to  keep everyone under her command demoralized and terrified?

My main issue (much like Scott's) with Luke was that he wanted to kill Ben because he'd seen that he was already lost to Snoke. Even though he said that it was only for a moment, the guy who believed that Darth Vader could be saved from the Dark Side decides to kill his nephew in his sleep and basically creates Kylo Ren. Luke had some great moments at the end that worked for me (I'm a Luke guy as well) but I didn't like the "moment of weakness" that has resulted in the deaths of so many as well as Han Solo.

Well, I certainly didn't like it as much as I'd hoped. All that business in and around the casino brings the film to a screeching halt for pretty much no reason.

I feel this is a bit of an overstatement. He freaked out for half a second, and I thought it was probably the most real expression of the Light Side/Dark Side struggle that Luke and the other Jedi have struggled with.

I had more issue with Luke being so slow to help Leia. Despite his guilt and his desire to let the Jedi end, I felt he should have jumped at the chance to help her.

I totally understand Mark Hamill's comments about disagreeing with the development of Luke's character, but at the same time, it's completely in line with what we were left with by the end of TFA, so I can't fault Johnson.

I struggled with the middle section as well. I loved the opening sequence and almost everything after Rey is brought to Snoke, but that middle just felt so slooooow.

My biggest issue with the movie, is the
realization that Han's dice are actually
still on Ack-tu. As far as Luke being
written out of character, I disagree.
You're dealing with a man how bought his
own hype about being the hero of the
galaxy. That belief lead him to think he
had the right to kill his own nephew. He
lives alone in shame. Nobody here has ever
known somebody who was not the same person
they knew 30 years ago?
