I don't have an issue with the Doctor regenerating as a woman, it opens up a
myriad of story possibilities. But I have a big problem with her being WHITE!
Come on there have been 13 white Doctors in the series, there are so many
great black, asian, indian, latino actors and actresses. They don't seen to have
this same issue when they cast the Doctor's companions.

For some people you just can't check enough boxes.

"White guilt" isn't a thing on Gallifrey.

This is getting to be like select one item from column A and one item from column B. You can not select two items from the same column.

*******

That has nothing to do with it, there are black Time Lords thats have appeared.
There are black, asian, indian, latino actors and actresses, they just have
blinders on and have just chosen white skinned actors.

Truthfully, I'd rather have had the Doctor change race than gender. But as long as there aren't a lot of jokes made about it, I'm fine with it.

I'm just worried we'll end up with a male companion in love with the Doctor now.....

(I'm looking forward to Strax's confusion when the Doctor runs into the Paternoster Gang, though.)

The BBC are promoting a show starring Ms Whitaker as a
woman masquerading as a medical doctor, one line in the
advert is her saying 'I'm not a real doctor' ;-)

I'll be disappointed if any comments about it go further than the first episode.

No skin off my nose, if that is the case.

I wonder how many episodes into the next season it'll be before those who yell `EXTERMINATE!' show up...

(Answer: Too soon.)

The latest rumour is that Bradley Walsh, host of tv game
show The Chase, comedian and lead in Law and Order U.K.
and Coronation Street is to be the new
companion.Interesting invertion of the dynamic to have a
male companion just short of 60 years of age with a much
younger actress playing The Doctor. But i wonder if it
would have been more adventurous to have a female
companion wether older or younger than Ms Whittaker?

Better than that but having just watched this series, Trust Me, someone actually says to her, "Are you the doctor who ..."!

Whitaker proved again in Trust Me she is a fine actor and whilst I'm over my concerns about a female Doctor (or resigned to it) I'm still unsure if she'll pull it off. Her performances always seem to play on her nervous energy, all twitches and introverted body language. That's her thing and whilst she may well have greater range it'll be interesting to see what she does with the character.

Oh no, not a Doctor Who with twitches and nervous energy and body language.

See you've missed out the word "introverted" from my post. Her style is very different to what we've seen before.

Call me a cynic but Chris Chibnall has clearly completed his BBC diversity training.

My initial thoughts were `Too many companions spoil the
broth`

Now Matthew has me wondering which one is non-binary and
disabled?

I wonder if it will be a running gag that people mistake her older male companion for the Doctor.

This has become a real Catch-22 now for casting.  If all three were white, he'd catch hell for not having diversity.  So he mixes it up a little (and only a little, one of them is an older white male), and he's accused of being an SJW and catches hell for that.  As for the numbers, there have been a crew of companions before in various periods.

The show began with three companions, a format revisited by John Nathan Turner in the '80s.
My personal favorite team of Ben, Polly, and Jamie should have lasted longer.

I'm glad to see a crowded Tardis again.  Counting the Brigadier and UNIT cast as Pertwee companions, the one Doctor/one companion thing never happened until a couple years into Tom Baker's tenure, disappeared during Davison's, then became set in stone after Colin Baker.  Smith adding Rory to the crew and Capaldi adding Nardole being notable exceptions.

I hope we'll see companions on an 'extended trip' with the Doctor again, without 'commuting' to Earth at the end of every episode.

So make them all black then, or Asian, rather than what looks like a tokenist tick box exercise. And I have no issue with groups of companions.

Are the BBC hedging their bets a bit by using Bradley Walsh as a draw for people considering his popularity with The Chase, Law & Order and Coronation Street?
