Hard to pick just five!!  I reserve the right to change my mind in the next 20 minutes, but here is my list as of now:

Tony Murcheson - if this were a top ten list, she would be the top five choices.  But since this is a top five list, Tony will simply hold the top spot.  She is the NEXT MEN book for me.

Shaman - I dig everything about Shaman - his powers, his role as a memeber of Alpha Flight, and his role as a father.

Theela - I went into FRONTIER DOCTOR for McCoy, but I return to the series often for the wonderful team of McCoy, Theela, and Duncan.  They are a great team, but Theela is a standout among JB characters.

Donna Wojciechowski - WHIPPING BOY  is one of JB's best.  Bonus points for Donna and Walker Stone also appearing in NEXT MEN

Michael Swann - COLD WAR is a fantastic book, and a big part of it is Swann's cool in a Cold world.

Puck - sadly under-used and under valued in the Marvel Universe.

Sasquatch - Maybe the most visually interesting character John created. Nearly Hulk-level strength, amazing agility and one of the greatest scientific minds in the MU. I only wish John would have made him a hockey player rather than a football player...

Box - A cripple who created a powerful suit of armour in his apartment? Yes sir. Wait, he also designed a phase technology for the wearer to get into the armour. That is a whole 'nother level of sophistication!

Toni Murcheson - Tough, capable, resolute and she cares.

Kitty Pryde - For many years (probably until shortly after she joined Excalibur) she was my second fave character. Then I noticed that the Kitty I was reading wasn't the same Kitty I fell in love with.

In looking at your list, JB, is there anything about those five in particular that set them apart?

As a kid, I thought Box was the coolest. Jefferies had a pretty interesting ability as well, and I liked his implied history with Diamond Lil.

Is that still a thing in comics?

I'd have to say PUCK as that was a HEAVY influence on me, early on. I used to read Alpha Flight and felt they were very foreign as if Canada was a far off place. lol.

I wanted a flipping-around-gymnastics character and I loved a movie called Gymkata (please don't google it) those two combined and gave me an awesome character.

Eventually as I matured I stopped the slavish copying and started branching off. Then you get to the point of "What's missing?"
But I can only imagine how many other characters are based on John's work.

My friends have rhymed about Omega Red in rap songs....
Kitty Pride is a classic and I wonder how Mr Byrne feels about the movies mixing all the characters together.

Honestly, my biggest influence was that Marvel Universe series that did nothing but detail who all the characters were. And the covers went together as a massive banner. I never read a lot of the books, but I damn sure memorized who everybody was.

Subtlety and/or letting readers use their imaginations isn't the 'new' style lol.

My fav JB creations are:

• Sasquatch
• Aurora/Northstar
• Kitty Pryde
• Silver Banshee
• Heather Hudson

JB, do you ever have ideas/stories pop up involving any of your favorite characters that you write down just for the heck of it??

I don't write down story ideas. I used to, way, way, way back at the beginning of my career. But I noticed I wasn't referring to these notes, so I began relying more and more on memory. If I didn't remember a story idea, I reasoned, maybe it wasn't worth remembering.

It's worked so far!

Just to clarify (not that anyone was asking), but I really liked Roger Bochs - the original Box.

I thought a paraplegic hero cybernetically controlling a suit of armor was brilliant.
