John, did you have anyone particular in mind when you designed Shaw?
I'm asking because I see John Saxon when I look at him. So I'm curious if it's my imagination.

I remember an interview somewhere that revealed who JB modeled some characters after. Shaw was in there. I believe Orsen Welles was mentioned as the model for Harry Leland (my favorite of the Inner Circle). Donald Sutherland as Donald Pierce, maybe. And Peter Wyngarde as Jason Wyngarde, IIRC.

Seems like I remember Max Baer, Jr being mentioned as the basis for Colossus, as well.

Brian, I've read the same for the Hellfire Club members.  The biggest name deviation was Harry Leland.

Educated guess: the Harry Leland character name was related to Orson Welles' role as Harry Lime in THE THIRD MAN and the character of Jedediah Leland (played by Joseph Cotten) in CITIZEN KANE, which was co-written & directed by Welles.

Brian, the interview you read was likely in the "X-Men Companion" books by Fantagraphics in the 1980s. That's where I read an interview with JB where he states what you mentioned.

When I saw JB's Colossus, his rendition reminded me of Max Baer, Jr., so reading some form of confirmation that he was the "model" for JB's version of Peter in that in the interview gave me a degree of satisfaction.

I caught SO much flak for that! Letters poured in excoriating me for my "plans" to play Peter like Jethro Bodine!

I thought that visually it was perfect casting. It didn't interfere with my reading Peter's personality correctly. Those other readers were just ninnies.

So knee-jerk internet outrage was a thing before there
was an internet. Cool!
