The History channel has produced another documentary about Superheroes.

George R.R. Martin? Famous for working on such superheroes as. . . .

Mr. Martin is sort of a peripheral super hero writer. He didn't do any comics (well, none that I know of), but he did create, edit, and do some writing for the "Wild Cards" series of books, which - at least nominally - are about super beings. The stories ranged from exciting, engaging, and fun to softcore porn and hard core violence. Even our friend Mr. Claremont contributed to the series.

Wild Cards demonstrated, more than anything, that those authors did not understand superheroes. Terrible stuff.

WILD CARDS was a classic example of "Here's how WE'D do it!" thinking, and, as Paul notes, almost completely missed the point.

(They missed a lot of other things, too. When I took a look, the first thing I found was a comparison of the real alien who'd landed in 1947 [?] and Klaatu, from THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL. Raising the question, if a real alien had landed in 1947, would TDTESS even have gotten made?)

George R.R. Martin's best comics connection for me is the enthusiastic fan letters I've occasionally run across by him in the lettercols of vintage Marvel comics from the 60s.

This is really digging in the crates, but Martin did, back in the 1980's, work on a superhero roleplaying game called Superworld.

Wild Cards was not originally a book series.  Wild Cards was originally the Superworld campaign that Martin gamemastered with his friends, and that they then turned into novels.

George R.R. Martin had a letter in FF 20 which I, coincidentally enough, just picked up a copy of last weekend at C2E2.

It was cool to see George R.R. Martin listed as the first person to register for the inaugural Comicon in New York.
