Matt H. - certainly no argument here, but regarding who was in publishing limbo... there are others in that shot who, IIRC, did not have a book at that time. And while it's uncertain if Marvel had any dictate as to who appeared in that piece... if there were a new X-Men book coming out, I would bet they'd want them to appear in every possible piece!

Truly, to me, the pencils look like warm up sketches, with Big John trying to get/capture character traits or postures. There is even little style influence from other artists present in some of the characters. Perhaps someone at MARVEL saw it and thought it would be a good poster. There are certainly more style variations in the pencils than in the inked and coloured poster.

Chris Bachalo is someone I didn't appreciate when I was reading comics but now when I see pages like this.....I drool.

Love the character in the upper left. I love art that has no cross hatching but still portrays a lot of detail. Wow.

Had to post this, in honor of this weeks birthday boy. Love the use of the bolder lines to add shadow. Makes the image seem so robust.

Like a lot of Kirby's cowboy work, this Kirby/Austin piece really has that sunlight (or strong light source) and strong shadow look.  Am I crazy for admiring how "realistic" this is?

Dale Keown - I don't know how he can cross hatch so perfectly, but every stroke is beautiful.
