May the 4th be with you all.

As I sit here watching The Phantom Menace. I have discovered a new appreciation for it that didn't exist before. And all it took was one movie made by Jar Jar Abrams.

Speaking of Jar Jar, I think most if not all of us would agree. That Jar Jar Binks was one of the things we were most disappointed about the prequels.
So I thought why not make some editing to the film. Scrap all of the Jar Jar's dialogue. Bring the actor back in to re record the lines. This time with out the annoying personality.

May the Fourth Be With You.

Interesting, my 7 year old son recently
watched the Phantom Menace with me. He
loves Jar Jar. He thinks he's hilarious.
For him, it's all Star Wars and it's all
good. Who am I to disagree. I wasn't the
target audience for that film.

From first viewing, I found Jar Jar Binks incredibly racist. Perhaps it was knowing a Black actor was playing him, but the character, and his people, harkened back to the worst days of Hollywood stereotyping.

Stepin Fetchit was Denzel Washington compared to this guy!

Bah.  I hate saying "May the Fourth Be with You."  I always instinctively put a Sylvester the Cat spin to it... which kind of underscores the dopey nature of picking this day, when May 25 should really be STAR WARS Day!

I'll be celebrating the 40th anniversary more on 5/25/17 anyway... but for today, I did allow myself to order a tin poster of this old favorite:

(And for ha-ha's, I did blast the MECO version of the "STAR WARS Theme/Cantina Band" in the car today... it couldn't help but make me smile!)

C'mon... you know you wanna:

In other STAR WARS-related news, I saw this Jimmy Kimmel clip this morning (with Kristen Bell as guest host)...

Adam Scott (who played Ben Wyatt on PARKS & RECREATION, and who feels like he could be my soul brother) tells a cute story about trying to invite Mark Hamill to his birthday party, around 1980... Scott then gets a surprise visit in the middle of the interview...

...his response is genuinely touching, and he reacts in a way most others might, if put in his shoes.  I have to admit, I got a little misty myself!

(Sidebar:  Whenever Mark Ruffalo's contract is up, or if Marvel Studios ever does a soft reboot with the Hulk, Adam Scott gets my vote as the next Bruce Banner!)

++++++++

He certainly is making the most out of his renewed association with the franchise, isn't he? Charity work, loving pranks on fans, making up for missed birthday parties, etc., etc.

I have a friend who, about to get his photo with Mark Hamill, was told by the minder not to touch him. Mark then bear hugs my friend for the photo which really makes his day.

From down in the dumps to top of the world in three seconds. What a cool guy

By the way, I recently stumbled across MARK HAMILL'S POP CULTURE QUEST. Very neat show, and one episode features Brandon Alinger (the gent behind the Replica Prop Forum, among other things) reuniting Hamill with his RETURN OF THE JEDI lightsaber.

I also enjoyed Hamill's trip to the DC offices for the premiere episode. Need to check out the rest of the series when I get a chance.

That was where I first met Mark, tho not, I think, on that particular visit.*

It's always fun to see stars impressed by other stars. Like when Wendy Pini and I had dinner with Mark and his wife, Mary Lou, a long time ago in a Malibu far, far away, and Annette Benning came in and sat at the next table, her chair literally back to back with mine Mark and Mary Lou were really impressed, as Wendy and I sat there saying "But you're LUKE SKYWALKER!!"

I'd wondered how much of Ben Wyatt's character overlapped Adam Scott, or vice versa.

I didn't get a racist vibe from Jar Jar. And I loved him so much my line to people who hadn't seen the movie was: "Wait until you meet Jar Jar, he's hilarious!"

I do tend to like the funny characters, though, such as Nightcrawler, Changeling, even Bug (from Micronauts).

So...I had dinner with John Byrne (at the big get together at MOC) and JB had dinner with Marl Hamill. That makes me and Mark practically best friends!! Mark will probably be calling me someday.

I got a sustained racist vibe throughout "The Phantom Menace" from the guys in the Mandarin robes and the tip-tilted, horizontally slit eyes and heavy accents; to Jar-Jar with his goggle-eyed subservience and wa-wa-wacky Stepin Fetchit routines; to Capt. Panaka, the only other black guy onscreen, whose uniform made him look a little like a lawn jockey; to Watto, the hook-nosed, flesh-peddler whose amazing power of sheer greed made him single-mindedly immune to Jedi mind-tricks...

The Prequel loving fanatic I know keens and howls in disgust at such charges, literally shrieking her defense of Lucas against such slander. Does no one making these vile, baseless, character-assassinating LIES understand that the whole thing takes place in OUTER SPACE, where there are NO Earth races and therefore there cannot be any Earth-based racism...??!!?? What happens in Outer Space has nothing whatsoever to do with ANYTHING that takes place on Earth!!!

Which kind of makes Lucas the Anti-Roddenberry...

I get less of a Fu Manchu vibe than I do a STAR TREK-racism vibe, what with the greedy Neimoidians (Nimoy-dians) and their Trade Federation. Lucas is obviously a STAR TREK-racist!
