Magik & Wolfsbane are cast for FOX's upcoming release, "The New Mutants." So far, so good... In fact, I really like the choice for Rahne Sinclair!

Ironically enough, while I had no real love for the original NEW MUTANTS comic series of the '80s, I'm kinda looking forward to the film version... if only because the X-MEN movie series desperately needs a shot in the arm, with something (dare I say) new and different...?

Fox is handling his. Why would we think that this one might be the "Wonder Woman" of the X-Men franchise?

Of course, that's assuming that "Wonder Woman" actually DOES shine for DC... nothing guarantees it's gonna be as good as the commercials promise... but I remain optimistic.

The inclusion of Magik points firmly away from a faithful adaptation, I should think.

Why? She was a member of the team from early on.

Magik brought with her the Belasco-demon-sorcery aspect, which has nothing to do with teens dealing with being mutants.

They should have just stuck with the original team. Seems to be a pattern with X movies.

She was still a member.

Wolverine brought the aspect of the Canadian government hunting him to bring him back. Which had nothing to do with teens being mutants.

Banshee brought the whole former villain turned Interpol agent aspect. Which had nothing to do with teens being mutants.

Sunfire brought the whole "I am from Japan and hate you people" aspect. Which had nothing to do with teens being mutants.

And it looks like they are doing all the original members except for Karma. Really looking forward to seeing how they cast the rest of them.

I wonder, since they plan to include Warlock, does this mean the Marvel Films can't name their character Adam Warlock?

Well, my snarky answer to that is, "in all fairness, Wolverine, Banshee, and Sunfire were part of the ALL-NEW, ALL DIFFERENT team. Not THE STRANGEST TEENS OF ALL team."

But in all honesty, I'm sure Magik is being included so that there's a marketable link to Colossus, who was in Deadpool. $$$

Either that or they just want some cool chick with horns and a sword. Who can tell at this point.

It is curious that they include her, but not Karma. I'm glad they did because I've long loved the character, but I do wish Karma were there, as well. Magma would've been a cool visual.

At least we're not getting Doug Ramsey, I guess.

Karma made her debut in MARVEL TEAM-UP #100. I wonder if that negated - or complicated - her "mutant character" status as far as legal properties are concerned (similar to the Quicksilver/Scarlet Witch situation).

It shouldn't since Fox does both FF and X-movies

Right. But Marvel may have full or partial rights to her.

I don't understand why Marvel would, but ok. Sony had Spider-Man, Fox had both FF and X. That seems to be the three properties represented by her first appearance and none of those is Marvel.

I'm often fascinated by the hoops thru which some will jump to make their point. Applying the "rules" set above, Scott was a brooding loner, Warren a spoiled rich boy, Hank a scientific genius, Bobby a smart alec teenager, and Jean an upper middle class fashion plate, and none of these had anything to do with being mutant teens.

And, as noted, when the book relaunched there were no teenagers to be seen. (All of which made it all the more ridiculous when Shooter one day informed Chris and me that it was "students of Charles Xavier" that defined the book, not "feared and hated by the world they are sworn to protect.")

I think Magik is just the most marketable New Mutant character in general (part
of that being she's a cool chick with a sword).

It's somewhat amusing to think back on the origin of the New Mutants -- how I had pitched a "junior" team (Kitty was to be the first) to meet Shooter's demand that we revert to "school" mode. This he rejected as "the Legion of Substitute X-Men," and the idea died, with only Kitty making it onto the team.

At least, until a few years later when the X-Men got HOT.

(Shooter's memory was actually good enough back then that when NEW MUTANTS was launching he called to ask if I intended to make any claims against the book. "Not," I said, "if Chris stays away from ALPHA FLIGHT.")

Without entering into the discussion of what characters should or shouldn't be on the team, I must say, the two casting choices so far are damn near perfect.

The other shoe will drop any second though.  The odds of them keeping Deadpool and Cable out of this are about nil.

Not meaning to thread drift, but I wouldn't be surprised if ALPHA FLIGHT makes it to the big screen in 5 years or less. These Marvel movie franchises don't seem to be slowing down...

Considering the amount of money they've been paying me lately for the barest whisper of a "contribution," if they made an ALPHA FLIGHT movie I'd probably be able to buy an island and retire.

But do I really want to see it happen? (The movie, I mean.)

Of course you do!

Just picture it:
Guardian in all black leather, a strategically placed maple leaf on one shoulder! His mercenary-for-hire, bad-ass wife, Heather at his side! Big guns!
Mixed race siblings, Aurora and Nothstar!
Totally CGI, savage Sasquatch!
A white hipster, bearded, man-bun wearing Shaman-like guy.

The villain/ Dark, evil Canadian goddess, Narya, The Destroyer!

Gooo, Hollywood!
