This is possibly a stupid question, but in the episodes post return the Master has been handled as a old friend of the Doctor that went evil. Is this a new thing that came with the reboot or was this always the case? I noticed that it seemed to go from the Doctor trying to change the Master because they were the last two Time Lords left (I'd have to go rewatch those episodes) and this seemed to keep being ramped up to them being Best Friends to whatever it is they're doing with Missy and the Doctor.

From part one of "The Sea Devils":

THE DOCTOR [speaking of the Master]: Well, he used to be a friend of
mine once. A very good friend. In fact, you might almost say we were at
school together.

In the mid-70s, it was planned that Jon Pertwee and Roger Delgado(the original Master) would be written out in the same story, with a climactic scene in which the Master, after teaming up with some unknown villain, sacrifices himself to save the Doctor(allowing him to regenerate). This was discussed as a story to be made at some still-undetermined time, as Pertwee had not yet decided when he would leave.
Delgado's death in mid-1973 influenced Pertwee's decision to depart after the 11th season.

I won't be surprised if that's what happens with Missy and the Doctor.

Not before the Doctor regenerates as a woman, and she and Missy go clam diving together.

There is an intriguing line in the Peter Davison story Planet of Fire. Just before the apparent demise of the Master he cries out to the Doctor: "Won't you show mercy to your own..."

Why am I thinking that the next episode will end with 'Missy' abruptly planting a kiss on the Doctor...and then we cut to his reaction...and then we cut back to...John Simm?

Derek Jacobi is doing a War Master Story for Big Finish from before he deserted and fobbed himself into the human YANA. That ought to be extra confusing.

Its too bad they didn't do a War Doctor and War Master story while John Hurt was still alive. That would be on my `buy asap' list.
