I feel like I need a majority not only to agree to a live draft, but to participate in it also.  Sunday, August 27 is also open since it seem increasingly difficult to get a majority contingent together for Saturday, August 26.

Let me know if Sunday works better!

I believe we have the numbers for a live draft!  I'm researching it, since it's the first time we're doing this, so I'll get back to you on time.  I'm thinking 10 AM Pacific/1 PM Eastern on Sunday, August 27.  Would that work for you guys?

I also want to do the draft order a little different this year.  Discussing it with other commissioners I know, it's becoming more apparent to me that doing it the way we've done it for years isn't all that fair.  The worst team from last season gets first pick in the first round and then doesn't pick until the 12th pick of the second round. 22 picks go by before the worst team gets their second shot.  Meanwhile, the best team in the league picks 12th in the first and 1st in the second.  Two back-to-back picks in the heart of the draft that can set that team up for incredible success.

So I propose a random draft order.  I found this site that will do it for us and then email the results to everyone in the league.  That takes me out of it and puts it in the virtual hands of a computer (SKYNET!!!!).  If this is cool with you guys, I'll do it today so that y'all can start doing mock drafts up until ours goes live.

Let me know!

Just so it's known, these are the managers that are ready, willing and able to do a live draft on Sunday, August 27:
  1. Marc Foxx
  2. John Popa
  3. Rich Marzullo
  4. Joe Boster
  5. Ryan Maxwell
  6. Bill Roberge
  7. Matt Reed
Here's what I've learned:  Everyone, even those drafting live, should rank the players in order of who you want to draft when.  Those drafting live will, of course, have their research and the ability to pick right then.  Those not drafting with us will still pick, but based on their ranking of players Yahoo will pick for them (auto-draft).

I can set the clock for as long as I want, but I'm going with what most commissioners do and make it 2 minutes.  This is why those of us drafting live should also have a player ranking.  If you have to step away or you can't make a decision in the allotted time, Yahoo will defer to your rankings.  If you haven't ranked, they'll defer to their own default rankings which, lets face it, may not coincide with your own.

From what I hear tell, we should all be on-line and on the Yahoo page 5-10 minutes prior to the start of the draft.  When I activate the drafting process, the Yahoo page will alert you that the draft is underway and message windows pop up.  From there, it should be a fairly simple process of picking players per draft order.

If anyone has experience with a live draft via Yahoo, chime in and let us know what to expect.  This is all new territory for me, but I think it will prove to be a fun experience!

I've done a couple of mocks on Yahoo to try and get a feel...

#1 Rank your players. Yahoo Ranks Alex Smith over Le'veon Bell. QB rule RB drool.
#2 Rank your players. Sadly the only rank that shows is the rank based on last years stats. There are no Preseaosn ranksing showing changes in depth charts and so on.
#3 Do A mock. having other people crush you carefully prepared draft was a learning experience. This will also show if there is a glitch or computer issue.

The mocks are 30 seconds. so 2 minutes is luxurious! I've only live drafted a couple of times. But I found that I cared about my team much more because it was mine!

I hope everyone enjoys losing to the new expansion team Iron Avengers!

Random draft order is ok with me.

I don't think I will be available for a live draft

The draft order is set! You should all have gotten an email to the account you use for Yahoo Fantasy Football.  For posterity, here it is:

The LA Producers has used the FFToolbox.com random draft order generator for the JBF Throwdown 2017 league. To verify the results visit this page: http://www.fftoolbox.com/draft_order_generator.cfm?id=146006

The following draft order was randomly generated for your league:
1 - LA Producers
2 - Iron Avengers MkII
3 - GalactusPrime
4 - Transpetropolitans
5 - Composite NFL!
6 - Oakland Eh's?
7 - The Macho Men
8 - The Arrows
9 - Ohio Iron Fists
10 - Tennessee OMACs
11 - Metropolis Marvels
12 - Fithadelfia Surlies

Regards,
FFToolbox.com

From Yahoo:

  • Pre-draft check - Our servers begin the pre-draft check for your league to open the draft room about an hour before draft time.
  • Draft room access - We recommend you join at least 10 minutes early so you don't miss any of the action, but the draft room opens about 30 minutes before draft time.

C'mon! Random generator.  I can do it again if y'all want me to, but I got the position I said is quite frankly the worst!  I didn't want first pick!  I'd much rather have picks 5-8.  That way there are only 11 picks between rounds.  Instead, for me, I get first and then have to wait 22.  Obviously not my first choice!

So, does the draft order snake or is it that order every round?

I'm good with all of this, including my position.  I've done live online drafts on ESPN and it goes pretty fast.  Know your stuff ahead of time.

Just did a mock draft on Yahoo.  :30 for picks.  I think Joe is right.  2:00 is generous.  I think :30 is perfect.  With 12 teams, it took an hour.  I think :30 per pick is what we'll go with!

I just set the schedule for the league based on yet another random schedule generator.  What you see on the site are the matchups for the season.  Complete!

I take that schedule thing back.  Because of the addition-subtraction-addition of several teams, the divisions were slightly skewed.  The Transmets and the Iron Fists ended up in the wrong division.  I'll make those changes on the schedule generator and then resubmit.  You should have the final schedule in the next day or so.

Sorry 'bout that!

Looking forward to it, I'll do a couple of mock drafts just so I'm not the guy holding everyone else up!
