In the Phoenix topic, Mr. Byrne pondered if there has ever been a story such as that of the Phoenix that has had such long lasting repercussions and effects after its publication. He cited the Phoenix saga. I suggested "The Dark Knight Returns" has had a similar effect.
What other storylines do we still remember that had long lasting effects? Maybe it changed a character radically, maybe it changed the world significantly and was remembered for a while... what sagas did you like with some staying power?
One restriction - no origin stories. Yes, the arrival on Earth of an alien baby led to a long lasting saga, as did a radioactive spider biting a high school student, but I'm looking more for a story than an origin. Go to, lads and lasses!

Another Claremont/Byrne X-Men classic: "Days of Future Past".
It established a future for the X-Men (not at all what Mr Byrne intended to do if I read correctly the FAQS) and allowed the introduction of Rachel, Nimrod and Bishop...

What other storylines do we still remember that had long lasting effects?

Does it count if I include the fact that Frank Miller's run on DAREDEVIL turned Kingpin into something bigger than he had been? I know he'd been a Spider-Man enemy. and did battle Spider-Man again on many occasions, but he became an A-list villain after Miller's run. In my humble opinion, of course.

In Avengers #16 "The Old Order Changeth!" The rest of the original Avengers left the team.
A new lineup has become a regular Avengers arc every few years, almost an event.

Devil In A Bottle added a lasting, unwanted flaw to Tony Stark.
The court-martial of Yellowjacket made Hank Pym mentally fragile and got him labelled as a wife beater and Hank's never been treated as the hero of old since.

Both the Stark and Pym thing had been mostly left behind until Mark Millar did the Ultimates (and Wizard magazine got a lot of humor out of depicting Tony as a drunk). The popularity of the Ultimates at the time made a new generation of fans think of Tony being a hardcore alcoholic and saw Pym as nothing more than a wife beater.

Demon in a Bottle was in 1979. Years after that storyline, Tony Stark lost his whole company, became a vagrant and stopped being Iron Man -- because of booze problems. That break from being Iron Man lasted over two years.
I am a long way from having read all the Iron Man comics from the last few decades, but has Tony Stark ever been shown to have a casual drink since Demon in a Bottle?

Batman 251: "The Joker's Five-Way Revenge"
It significantly moved the Joker from cheesy clown to killy clown and helped establish Batman as a serious superhero. It wasn't an "event" but it seems to be a pivotal moment in Batman's history that helped set the tone of the books going forward.
