A teaser trailer is supposed to hit for the this movie tomorrow. Bob McLeod mentioned it was dropping on his FB page. Maise Williams and Charlie Heaton being the most recognizable actors cast so far.

I'm surprised there's been no criticism of the fact that they went way off model to cast the whitest hispanic and native actors possible, when Sunspot and Mirage are well-established as dark-skinned people. Bobby in particular was a Brazilian of primarily African descent, at least through the first 10-15 years of his comics "career." This bothers me at least as much as making Heimdall and Valkyrie black.

The casting decisions do baffle me. The original material seemed intentionally diverse to me because mutants were rare individuals. A fact in the Marvel Universe that seemed to be lost when mutants turned up everywhere to sell a concept or character. It isn't like this property was going to be A-list actors all over the place. It was already going to suffer from obscurity and rely heavily on its content so casting on model, unknown actors appeared the way to go. The teaser seems more like a horror movie.

I saw a photo and I have to say Ilyana is spot on ! Unbelievable resemblance both physically and in her attitude. I agree about the rest being so so. Maybe Sam is alright. And the guy in the cap is Doug ? Yes they're going all the way into teenage horro territory and why not ???

They've cracked it! New Mutants was supposed to be scary!

Fox is on a roll...

...Of getting these characters as far off model as you can imagine.

Philippe, assuming you saw the same photo as me (the one with Sienkiewicz in it), the guy in the cap is Sam, "Sam" is the director.

I think they are doing a loose adaptation of the "Demon Bear" story, so a horror movie wouldn't be entirely inappropriate.

They’ve been saying for a while it will be more of a horror movie.

I really wanted to see some of their powers.

Bill Sienkewicz is very excited about this for what it's worth.
I'm skeptical at best because it's Fox and they've fcked up all the Marvel they've touched as far as I am concerned.

------------------------------------------------------
Is he very excited because he thinks this is going to be a super-faithful adaptation, or because they're recognizing his work and sending him a big paycheck?

Bill Sienkiewicz should be excited.... and Fox is taking a BIG risk going with this horror movie style involving this X-Men property. If successful, I wonder if they'll connect it to the other X-Men movies in some way.

Looks like it has some high production values, but not really recognizable as the New Mutants comic I read back in my teens.

Unless they bring back Finola Hughes as the White Queen and Bumper Robinson as Mondo, this project is dead to me...

I do wonder if they're going to have the two police officers changed into Native Americans by the Demon Bear and then forced to have sex with each other by Empath as they were in the original... Ah, Claremont...

I’m sorry but the whole ‘stretchy wall with scary hands and faces’ bit is REALLY played out.

This is supposed to be ‘horror’?

From the trailer, I'm inclined to agree. Difficult though to know what to make of the rest of it - it certainly plays out like a horror teen film here. Odd.

I (sort of )understand what Fox is trying to do by doing a different take/genre in telling the story of another group of mutant characters, but I was there as a high school senior when they first appeared...it was a great time of "Wow, Marvel is doing a comic book of another group of mutants and they're going back to the students theme from the X-Men beginnings!". It was a great time in comic book collecting, and then getting to meet Bob McLeod at my LCS and having him sign Marvel Graphic #4 was a blast! The stories of a new generation of mutants was a novel idea, so unlike today where there are gazillion of mutant teams as well as gazillions of duplicate versions of many characters. It was the fun and exciting moments in comic books at those times that I remember and cherish and then to see what Fox and Follywood are doing with those characters...it just seems wrong.

Marvel Studios has done pretty well pivoting from the SUPERMAN THE MOVIE formula, adhered to so literally in SPIDER-MAN and imitators, and balancing it with genre tropes from thrillers and teen movies to comedies and buddy movies. (Christopher Nolan too; the DARK KNIGHT series were superhero-crime films.) And they've kept producing more straight ahead superhero films like the Avengers movies. Whereas Fox's movies have generally lived down to the stereotype and looked cheap besides, aside from their own recent success with departures like LOGAN and LEGION.

So why not horror? The demon bear story is perfect for it. If it's terrible X-MEN DARK PHOENIX will be along six months later to fill our need for  straight ahead if poorly done superhero movie.

I have to agree, David. My favorite Fox stuff utilizing Marvel characters has been the stuff that steps outside of the regular superhero stories like Logan, Legion, and Deadpool. Their normal superhero stuff like X-Men hasn't really worked all that well for me. I'll give this a shot regardless of the fact it doesn't look like my New Mutants.

Deadpool! That was the one I couldn't remember.

The Fox X-Men and FF franchises have been kind of shoddy and phoned in, almost their own cheap knock-offs. At least  X-Men was able to Moneyball its way to watchability by casting Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart, and Hugh Jackman was a real find, however too tall for Wolverine.

It's promising for future interesting takes that Deadpool and Logan were both megahits, and insanely profitable in Deadpools case, and while Legion has few viewers than my last music video, it's been embraced ecstatically by critics and renewed.
