I recently got one of those unsolicited calls about being in a car accident that wasn't my fault. I said "Yes" and got put through to someone else who proceeded to ask me about the incident. I had to mention the hooker tied-up in the boot three times before he twigged and ended the call!

Check with your carrier. More likely this is them protecting you by detecting the tricks mentioned here, that allow the scammers to show up in your exchange or even as your number. Google “scam likely.”

I have strung the `Regarding your recent accident` ones
along a few times, gradually revealing that my `Accident`
required claiming for new pants after what i thought was
a fart turned out to be something else...they were not
amused!
My mom has also had the computer virus one despite not
owning a computer.

I hate telemarketers, in general.

Whenever the home phone rings, I'm 90% sure its going to be telemarketers or a scam. Because we only have the phone due to our bundle with the cable company being cheaper with it than without it, and only a handful of people and places have our number. We use cellphones the majority of the time. (Plus the phone is an old piece of crap that runs out of a charge after about an hour and a half of usage, and there's no point in replacing it)

I've had numbers come up as if my parents were calling me before, and one time even had the living room phone calling itself! It has also gotten to the point where if it says it is coming from Minnesota or Oklahoma, I just pick up the phone and automatically hang up.

Really am sick of health care insurance notification calls, and we've won....oh...about 30 free cruises.

Right out of highschool, my first job was a telemarketer, although I didn't realize it until I started. We were selling magazine subscriptions at a very low price but the catch was that the subscriptions ran for five years and you didn't get a choice of which magazines were sent. They gave us a script with ways to get out of the awkward questions and if we had a good bite, we would contact the roving vans which would drive to the house we called and pressure them to sign. We were told that if we get an old person on the phone to call the drivers immediately. I quit after the first evening, feeling slightly dirty.
