Just got a call from something that showed up as this on my Caller ID. Mind you, when they got my answering machine, they hung up, so I guess their concern wasn't TOO great!

Telemarketers playing their tricks.
For a while now they've managed to route calls thru local area codes and even prefixes to get you to think it's a local caller.

We have similar over here.
One has to continually be on guard against scammers. Someone rang to claim my car had been bumped - but the model/make he was giving was not my car. Obviously attempting to get some personal details from me!
Best one years ago was from a 'bank'.
"Hello, Mr Parry, we are calling from your bank. To progress the call, we'll need some personal details." "This is Robert Parry, but what bank did you say you were from?" "I cannot tell you that, sir, until I get some details from you." "Bye!"

Indeed, most telemarketer calls come from my exchange. How dumb do these maggots think we are?

The funniest ones are when someone from an 'IT department' rings to scam you. One rang my late father, informing him that there was a laptop virus that needed rectifying.
My father, a complete technophobe, never owned or used a laptop/PC/digital device in his life.

I was one of those who got the IRS robocall scam. We called back to mess with them. Once I said, "He knows you were messing around with his girl, man, and he said he's coming for both of us. You gotta get outta town now, man!" And once a girl answered. I told her, "You know impersonating an IRS agent is a felony, right?" She hung up immediately.

I work in bank fraud and it's downright terrifying how often people fall for this kind of thing. They only need one sucker!
Granted, I don't even answer the phone when people I know are calling so I'm not their target audience.

I like the calls saying that I owe money to the IRS and that they'll send the sheriff's department to arrest me if I don't pay immediately. It's obvious that the call is from a call center in India, as you can hear other calls being made in the background. Also, the "IRS" takes payment in the form of Apple iTunes gift cards.

My wife is connected to a charity. Three workers at that charity fell for this big time pretty much a year ago. It was sophisticated - they claimed to be the bank. They seemed to be able to see transactions. The caller I’d number was the number from the bank.
Something seemed wrong but they kept going with the call.
They lost over £100,000. My wife was not informed for a couple of days and then it all hit the fan as she tried to sort the mess out. The charity is still dealing with the fall out as it nearly collapsed having to let nearly everyone go.

We got to talking about this kind of thing at work today, and in the time it took to search and download an app, one of my coworkers used her phone to call another coworker and used the free app to have the caller ID display a third coworker's number. And that was one of many free apps she saw.

I've managed to aggravated a couple of "Windows Warning" scam callers enough to command me to #$%* OFF. Which brings joy to my day. :)
