I think superheroes do need secret identities for two reasons:
If their enemies knew who they were, their loved ones would be at risk and they would never have a moment's peace. I know it's been argued that cops, prosecuting attorneys and judges don't have secret IDs but they also don't have archenemies like Doctor Doom and Venom.
The other: it enables readers to relate more to the characters.
Sure,I like the Fantastic Four, who never bothered with secret identities, and can still relate to them as people. But they also live in the same universe as Spider-Man, who is appealing partly because he has problems like regular people.
The problem is some silly stories have been done where people tried to uncover or reveal a hero's secret ID or the hero went to extreme lengths to conceal his identity.

Reminds me of that 'Candid Camera' story in ACTION COMICS in the '60s, in which Superman prevents his secret ID from being revealed on the air by flying back and forth between the Fortress, Clark's apartment, and 3 or 4 other places...all in the fractions of a second before Allen Funt opens the door to catch him.
