This is the time of the year when everyone starts doing their best of lists for the year. Thought it might be neat for the folks here to list their favorites. No set number of shows has to be included, but only rule I'd say is keep it no more than ten. Reasons why it's one of your favorites of the year would be nice but not mandatory. Anyway, here's mine:

1) THE ORVILLE: The best version of Star Trek in years. Heaps better than Discovery.
2) BETTER CALL SAUL: In my opinion, this show is as good as the show it spun off from, Breaking Bad, helped by the fact that Mike and Saul/Jimmy are much more likable characters than Walt ever was.
3) STRANGER THINGS 2: I thought this show improved over the first season which I found a bit overrated.
4) FARGO: Not as good as the first couple of seasons, but still a great show.
5) THE LEFTOVERS: The third and final season of this was the best yet with one of the better finales of any show ever.
6) TWIN PEAKS: David Lynch goodness/weirdness.
7) GAME OF THRONES: Some serious plot holes this season, but still the best fantasy TV show yet.
8) MR ROBOT: Fight Club's spiritual successor is the best thing USA Network has produced.
9) VICE-PRINCIPALS: One of my favorite HBO comedies ever.
10) RICK AND MORTY: The fans may suck but the show keeps getting better.

TWIN PEAKS and GAME OF THRONES, the only ones I saw every episode. TP was better.

Twin Peaks was amazing, Mario. I was surprised how good it was. I liked it much more than the original two season run.

AGENTS of S.H.I.E.L.D.- I almost left it a couple of seasons ago . It has really come back strong.
THE CURSE of OAK ISLAND- Guilty pleasure. Infatuated with the myth since my childhood.
THE ORVILLE- Best new show award. Skies the limit.
THE FLASH- I like they mixed in some lighter episodes. It has my full attention again.
STRANGE INHERITANCE - Great history and research. Has some heart too.

Ah, crap. Your list makes me realize I forgot Legion, Michael. That should definitely be in my top ten. I'd probably replace this season of Game of Thrones with that if I'd thought of it.

Agents of SHIELD really turned things around, didn't it, Doug? So far the new season has been pretty good too.

In no particular order...

- Better Call Saul. Surpasses the over rated Breaking Bad in my books.

- Game of Thrones. Too short a season but still compelling viewing.

- Stranger Things. Managed to improve on a good thing.

- Star Trek: Discovery. A few quibbles here and there but I'm enjoying it.

- This is Us. Emotionally manipulative and borderline sappy at times but for some reason it works.

- Twin Peaks. Odd and not what people were expecting but still good.

- Marvels Agents of SHIELD. This gets the award for "Most Improved" series as it really stepped up it's game over the past year.

- 13 Reasons Why. Difficult subject matter with no easy answers. Compelling viewing for my family.

Probably many more that I missed, but those are the standouts for me.

Pretty much all science-fiction series.

"Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." - extending back into 2016, the Ghost Rider / LMD episodes were the highlight (so far) of this series.

CW's "super four" ("Arrow", "Flash", "Legends of Tomorrow", and "Supergirl") just because I'm a geek. Sometimes they weren't great... oh, but sometimes they were!

"Jeopardy!" - I like watching it and playing it, and even more - I like watching and playing it with my family.

My "political humor" shows - "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee", "Last Week Tonight with John Oliver", "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert", and "Real Time with Bill Maher" - these shows are, to me, the best news programs on television right now. I feel that if I want the real news - these are the best sources.

"Designated Survivor" - my second favorite TV show of the year. It's a political series and action/adventure show at the same time, and it keeps fascinating me. Also.. it keeps reflecting the real world in a subtle way that delights me.

"The Orville" - Best show on TV right now, for my money. I don't think it needs further explanation, but I hope that next season, it gets more than a 13 episode tenure.

Maybe it is me, but I read favourite as singular. And mine would be The Orville.

1) THE ORVILLE - The big surprise for me.  I ended up binge watching the first 8 episodes.  Love it
2) MODERN FAMILY - Still makes me laugh.  My wife and I keep up with it together.
3) THE WALKING DEAD: One show that my son and I watch together.  It's not perfect, but it is entertaining.
4) THE BIG BANG THEORY: It's lost a step or two, but it's one I still enjoy.
5) Z NATION: Another one that my son and I watch.  More laughs than the Walking Dead, for sure.

We watched the first series and have the second ready to watch but the wife is taking some convincing. Worth sticking with it then, Shane?

Steve,  "favorites series" wouldn't have made much sense. But like I said in the first post, I don't care how many series anyone wants to list, be it one or ten, as long as it's no more than ten. I know not everyone is going to have ten favorites.

Matthew, it's almost like a different show in the 2nd and 3rd seasons. While I liked the first season of The Leftovers, I LOVED the 2nd and 3rd seasons. It's definitely worth sticking with. It's so much better and stranger in the last two seasons. The "International Assassin" episode (season 2 episode 8) is one of my favorite episodes of any TV show in the last decade period.

With 7 votes, so far, it looks like THE ORVILLE is the most popular TV show with the JBF. Second place is GAME OF THRONES with 4 votes. I'm enjoying everyone's lists. Some of these shows I've never even heard of and I'm looking forward to checking them out.

I guess I'm out of step with the forum, lol. I can't stand The Orville and in the recent thread about favorite time travel series, I saw a lot of votes for Dr. Who, another show I can't stand. Different strokes for different folks ;)

LONGMIRE- I was with this show from the very start and thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. The cast was strong, the locations were gorgeous, and the characters were well written. The wrap up was nice and the final scene was picture perfect.

Christopher, I'm with you on Doctor Who. I've tried numerous times to get into Doctor Who and have never been able to. That said, I don't see how anyone would not enjoy The Orville. What do you not like about it?

Ballers: I'm a huge NFL fan, my wife is not, we both love this show.

Silicon Valley: I am depressed at how close to real life this is.

Ken Burns Vietnam: all of it was great, and the last episode was off the charts powerful.

Orville: I like the drama more than the comedy, and I really like the comedy.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: stepped it up from last season.  Depressing and funny.

Modern Family: consistently funny.  I love the writing on this show.

Huge fan of Silicon Valley as well, Karl. HBO has, in my opinion, the best comedies of the past few years with Silicon Valley and Vice-Principals and even a new season of Curb Your Enthusiasm this year. Though I did enjoy the Good Place on NBC as well.

in order:

1. GAME OF THRONES
2. SUPERGIRL
3. THE ORVILLE
4. THE FLASH
5. NCIS NEW ORLEANS
6. DOCTOR WHO
7. CHICAGO FIRE
8. CHICAGO P.D.
9. ARROW
10. CATFISH: THE TV SHOW

I just wasn't feeling DOCTOR WHO and ARROW's latest seasons, or both would have ranked higher. ARROW especially bugs me because of the whole Black Siren situation. When they killed off Laurel, I hoped it meant that Katie Cassidy would be done with the show.

(CATFISH is one of only two MTV shows I watch. THE CHALLENGE being the other, since THE SHANNARA CHRONICLES moved to Spike. Wish UNLOCKING THE TRUTH had been given a second season.)

In no particular order for me:

THE ORVILLE
THE GOOD DOCTOR (best new show, IMO)
LONGMIRE
SUITS
THE FLASH (though the "winter finale" nearly ruined it)
All 3 "CHICAGO" shows on NBC
