If Dave Cockrum designed a costume, it's a good costume. That's just how it is.

Not the new Wolverine costume he designed, but otherwise I would tend to agree.

Adam S. - Did you ever see his Infectious Lass in Legion of Super-Heroes? Nobody hits a home run every time.

Infectious Lass by Dave Cockrum Comic Art

On the other hand, that poor wretch not only redesigned most of the Legion once... he had to do it AGAIN for the Imperial Guard! And I will allow that 'most every one of those outfits was pleasing to the eye.

...OK, Eric, I hadn't seen that one, I guess it's true, no one's perfect.

Has Neal Adams ever designed a costume that many people consider "bad"?

Infectious Lass is a bad concept, but don't lay that at Dave's doorstep. The costume design is fine.

What blows my mind is apparently nobody thought to just give Batman "pants." If you insist on taking away the trunks, make his bottom half darker and it wouldn't look like longjohns. Might even be classy.

Wouldn't work for Superman, though. It might look a little less dumb than no trunks, but not much. Red trunks just make it work. They're like punctuation. Batman at least has the advantage of a yellow belt on grey to create a visual pattern.

Infectious Lass was conceived as a joke character, originally intended to appear only once.  She was part of a longstanding tradition of introducing throwaway characters with silly or useless powers who were rejected as Legion applicants.  Given that, I'm sure Dave's intention was to make her appearance somewhat over-the-top, and I think he did a great job.  Her power is to make people sick, so she has a mucus-like substance dripping from her sleeves... brilliant!

It's about damn time!

Counting other media, DC/WB have tried no
less than seven different designs of a
Superman outfit, without the trunks. Now,
I think the final Rebirth design was the
best of the bunch, but if you have to try
seven times to find something that kinda
works, maybe you're trying to solve a
problem that didn't exist.

I never cared for the revised Superman costume that came out of the New52 or its tweaked version in the Rebirth era.
Superman and Batman are classics. Sticking closer to their traditional look works for both of them.

A wrestling writer (or ex-writer, rather) called Vince Russo recently did an interview where he talked about how some modern wrestlers were not larger than life, not like wrestlers of yesteryear. In a way, I think he has a point. Some do look ordinary; the giants of yesteryear didn't.

Superheroes should be larger than life. When Superman, circa 2011, had that ordinary T-shirt and jeans (for a while), he did not look larger than life. He looked like a lazy cosplayer. He did not look like Superman.

Howard Chaykin did it in his Elseworlds book, "Dark Allegiances." And it did look pretty good.

Yeah it looks great! ......Then again Chaykin is one of those artist who draws just about every character GREAT!

Would have loved to see Chaykin, Davis, Gibbons, Simonson, Perez and JB in Action 1000! Not to disparage anyone working on the book but those guys are what superhero comics are all about!
