The Grand Imperial Wizard of the NRA speaks:

LINK

So keen to protect all our rights -- except the right of children to die of old age.

Thomas Jefferson, in the Declaration of Independence, called Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness unalienable rights. Except, they're apparently very alienable to the likes of the NRA.

Don't worry, Trump will make sure "only the best" teachers will be armed. Plus they cost less than security guards; bonus! So you're getting only the very best. Those paper towels he gave out in Puerto Rico were the very best too, of course. "That I can tell you, believe me."

When I first moved to the city of Chicago ( lived in the outlying burbs previously ) over 9 years ago you were only legally allowed to own a rifle. A few years later the law changed and made hand guns legal in the city, now there's conceal and carry.

I am acquainted with a few people who would otherwise seem normal except for being what I would call gun nuts...and they think the gun laws in IL / Chicago are draconian.

It truly boggles the mind.

--------------------------------------------------

The Parkland high school had an armed police office at the site, who did nothing. And you can't really blame him.

The shooters are typically people who are ready to die, by police or by their own hand. Police officers and teachers shouldn't be eager to throw away their lives in a preventable shoot-out at a school.

It's very hard to convince someone, particularly a civilian, to run head long into a gun battle.

Regarding Fart`s sons, isn`t one a well balanced
individual who goes trophy hunting in Africa?
I just hope the teachers refuse to be armed.

Jean-Francois Joutel: "It's very hard to convince someone, particularly a civilian, to run head long into a gun battle."

That's undoubtedly true. But the armed police officer on site at the school isn't a civilian; he's trained to deal with such situations. He has chosen, as his job, to be the one in harm's way for the civilian population.

One of the problems is that these situations are mostly reactive rather than proactive. We can have lists of gun purchasers; we can have identified those who shouldn't own guns; we can try to identify those with mental issues. But in the end, this is a country of 323 million people; it's hard to identify the crazies. Obviously, it's a simple task once they start shooting*, but by then, it's too late.

The easiest solution is still the obvious one. to end (or significantly reduce) gun violence, remove the guns. Effecting this, though.. that's the tremendous challenge. Maybe some smart high school students will be able to get it started.

*Of course, it's not so simple if there are a dozen people who, when a shooter starts using his gun, react by getting out THEIR guns. They probably aren't going to put on their white Stetsons to identify themselves...

The same people who want more guns on the street turn around and argue those same guns justifies preemptive deadly force by police and apparently freelancing civilians.

I`m not defending the armed officer, but if he`s up
against semi-automatic military weapons what chance does
he have? This goes for arming teachers, are we arming
them with full military hardware?

I'm almost at the point of telling gun advocates "Yes, I DO want to take away your guns, because your lack of sense proves over and over again that you don't deserve the right to own them. And the insanity you bring to these arguments mean more kids will die so that you can enjoy your gunpowder-driven sex toys."
