Netflix has released an announcement teaser for Lost in Space, which is set to premiere on April 13th. This teaser introduces the Robinson family - John, Maureen, Judy, Penny & Will as they begin their fateful mission into space.

"Stranded along with the Robinsons are two outsiders: the charismatic Dr. Smith (Parker Posey) and Don West (Ignacio Serricchio)."

This trailer looks pretty generic. Not enough to make me interested (a female Dr. Smith??)... I want to see the Robot!

They appear to be giving us a mixed-race family with two White parents. The HAMILTON effect?

`The Robot' isn't listed in the cast on imdb.com. No Robot? I won't be watching. A female Doctor Smith doesn't exactly endear me to the project, either. And I like Parker Posey.

Judy could be adopted, or John's daughter but Maureen's stepdaughter.

Funny thing is, Toby Stephens would make a good Dr. Smith. But he's playing the father.

Reading up on this, it appears that the Jupiter 2 will be one of several Jupiter ships that gets separated from or survives the destruction of the others, which takes away some of the weirdness of a colony mission consisting of a single family (including two teenaged daughters) and a young handsome pilot.

 QUOTE:
And the roguish, but inadvertently charming Don West (Ignacio Serricchio) is a highly-skilled, blue-collar contractor, who had no intention of joining the colony, let alone crash landing on a lost planet.

Weird.

Well, they got the number of participants correct...wait , no robot?

I would have to think there will be some kind of artificial intelligence for Will to buddy up to, right?

It seems not everyone watched - or rather listened to - the whole trailer.

"Danger Will Robinson".

If you want to feel old, I’ll point out that the big screen remake is a few months shy of being 20 years old.

The trailer voice over put me off enough, I won't be watching. Dumb science fiction...

"Lost in Space" originally began as what I liked as a good adventure show, with the Robinsons trying to get to Alpha Centauri. And then, for whatever reason, they changed it so that it focused strongly on Will, Dr. Smith, and the Robot (to the point that Guy Williams and June Lockhart were written out of three episodes in season 3, and I doubt that many noticed). The stories devolved into "freak of the week", and what fix would the Robinsons get into next, rather than seeing them still try to get to Alpha Centauri.

I fear that this formula will be hard to avoid with a remake. And I honestly feel that it would work better if it were just renamed and redone a touch. No obligation to Will-Robot dynamic, or the Dr. Smith sabotage-of-the-week issue. We might even get to remember that there was a daughter named Judy... :)

Or all the kids could be adopted.

Or they might not even be a family, but just a team of specialists. I saw "Robinson" on Will's suit... I don't know if I saw it on any others.

Is that stupid? Perhaps. But how stupid will it be to see Dr. Smith seduce Major West? (It's Netflix... ya GOTTA have the sex.)

I'm intrigued enough to give it a look. Billy Mumy was notably cold on the movie reboot some years ago but said he saw this version and was very enthusiastic about it.

"Billy Mumy was notably cold on the movie reboot some years ago..."

...

I wonder if that had anything to do with him being turned down for the older Will part in the movie. He was offered a cameo but turned that down.

I wish he had got that Will part, myself.

I've thought the concept ripe for reboot for some time. But I don't have Netflix. Maybe it'll come out on DVD?

Looks absolutely awful. Ponderous music, windbag voiceover - compare that to the original show's title sequence, which told you what the show was about in thirty seconds with a zippy mock-dramatic theme tune. And then "Danger, Will Robinson" to tickle the fans. I think we can take it for granted that Dr Smith won't be allowed to be cowardly or treacherous, too.

I liked that the trailer showed me enough to figure out what the show is about
but without giving away much else. I'll give it a try.

You may want to check for sure, but it seems that Netflix-produced shows don't seem to have a DVD release - a social media friend is hoping TRAVELERS gets a DVD/Blu-ray release - but those co-produced/co-financed by Netflix, such as DAREDEVIL, have been released on DVD.

If Dr. Smith says “Aeolus 14 Umbra” I will smile.

I can't think of any Netflix shows that are entirely in-house. They are all co-productions. But all their big original shows have media releases, like HOUSE OF CARDS, ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK, and STRANGER THINGS.

As for TRAVELERS, that's a co-production between Netflix and Canada's Showcase channel, and actually premieres on Showcase in Canada before it gets to Netflix.

Here is the official full trailer of this series. It actually looks good, despite the race and gender bending of some of the characters. Although I think that the female Dr. Smith might be the daughter of a more evil male Dr. Smith.

That full trailer doesn't look bad.

I'm probably interested enough to check out the pilot.

Going to spoil something here, but I'll put it in inviso text:

INVISO TEXT (Click or highlight to reveal):
Parker Posey completely killed this show for me.  It doesn't bother me all that much if they wanted to gender switch Dr. Smith, but that's not what they did.  They killed him off completely (great cameo by Billy Mumy as the "real" Dr. Smith.) and she assumed his identity to escape the attack on the space station.  IMO, it's already very predictable where they're going to go with her character and I've no desire to watch any of it.

I'm extremely disappointed in this.  The producers were already stretching things with the multi-racial family for some unknown reason, but that Smith twist is just dumb.

I'm enjoying it. The robot could almost be a JB design.

Watched the first episode last night. I could pick at it for what it isn't of course, but truth is I liked it and thought the child actors did an exceptionally good job.
