I read A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME when I was about 19. I'm not scientifically-minded at all, but he made various concepts so accessible to me. As he did with other books. I learnt so much about time, black holes and so much else by reading his works.
And he spoke a lot of sense on wider issues.
Condolences to his family and friends. Here's some quotes:

I was surprised to read that, in its time, "A Brief History of Time" was considered by some critics to be "dense". From my recollections of reading it, I wonder, how could one *possibly* make the subject any more approachable and accessible than he managed in that book?

That critic was wrong.
I am the most non-scientifically minded person you could meet. I found THE SELFISH GENE to be a tough read (but interesting). A BRIEF HISTORY OF TIME could not have been more approachable and accessible.

Brace now for all those people eager to misinterpret what he said and wrote, in order to "prove" he believed in God.
