Oh, right, a Homer Simpson D'oh for me. I blame last night's power cut, it's affected my brain!
I did want to see if Superman had made the cover at any other time. I was sure he'd made a modern cover, too. But I can't seem to get the "search covers" box on the TIME website to work.
I'm not saying Superman was a regular cover feature, but my brain is telling me he appeared again - just the once - since that 1988 cover.
Google images was no help, it was mainly fan-made TIME covers.

That "supernatural" bit drives me around the bend. I remember reading the article at the time ... or maybe a year later, since my grandparents kept old magazines around. At 12 or 13,I was in a Marvel-only phase at the time, but I loved the article, especially when it listed the only other characters as universally known as Superman (I think it was Sherlock Holmes, Tarzan, Dracula, and Mickey Mouse?).

"Supernatural" has become a go-to word for things that are nothing of the kind. I've heard Frankenstein's Monster described as supernatural!
Someone once mentioned Dr. Who was a supernatural show. Now, I haven't seen all 700+ episodes of the show, but I'm pretty sure that almost all (or all) of the 'supernatural phenomena' has been proven to be scientific. Certain 'ghosts' and the like in that franchise turn out to have a logical explanation.
(No, I don't want any replies telling me that a real supernatural foe appeared in episode #345 or whatever, 99% of DOCTOR WHO is not supernatural, nor is he a supernatural character).

ITEM: Robbie, perhaps it was during that "Death of Superman" debacle? Superman kind of appeared all over at that time.
ITEM: Maybe we ought to agree on a definition of "supernatural?" Thor and Superman are supernatural... Batman and Captain America aren't. Or so I see it.
I think it's a little too big a collar for what people want to define as supernatural - which I infer means magically mysterious. But to my mind, an athlete on steroids or a new brand of banana are supernatural as well. I guess we need to clarify our terms...

The "cover search" on TIME's website isn't working. It usually is.
When you search, it just keeps taking you to "current and breaking news" pages.
Of all the days for it to be not working...

This isn't a joke, but, at least years ago, I'd have included Ronald McDonald as a face that was universally known. I don't know if he would be now, though (I don't think I've seen him on any McDonalds branding/advertising in years).
