Are there any dark horses that could beat China, Russia, the US and UK to it?

Unlikely, perhaps, but there seem to be more space agencies around than when I was a kid.

There isn't a Hohmann transfer window in 2019.  There's one this year, and one (as usual, 2.1 years later) in 2020.

That pretty much leaves an opposition-class transit which has much higher deltaV (change in velocity) requirements on both ends.  For the same rocket, that forces you to use a much smaller delivered payload to compensate.

Who is to say any microbes found on Mars moght not have been brought there by the Voyager forty years ago?
