This is a monstrous tragedy. The sort of thing that should never happen in a modern, civilized society.

But let's not kid ourselves. That's not where we live. Instead, we live in a society where the police must assume anyone they encounter is armed. Anyone.

Thanks, NRA.

I agree.

A certain culture, mindset and so much else has been created.

I was watching some news earlier, a UK correspondent had interviewed some US schoolkids (I had it on as background noise so can't recall the school or their names), but they were spouting the "good guy with a gun..." stuff. They said they wanted stronger background checks, but didn't feel assault rifles should be banned.

It shows how ingrained it all is.

The NRA is an avowedly anti-democratic fascist insurgency dedicated to saturating the country with guns in order to justify indiscriminate police violence.

"indiscriminate police violence"

Think maybe you might want to know what happened before, during and after before you go down that path?

I'm talking about the broad context, which absolutely applies to this circumstance no matter the specifics. And the NRA won't wait for the facts to support the killing, either.

Okay, so you're a cop. An unknown subject appears to have a gun in his hand. How long do you wait to be sure, given that the lives of you and your partners may be at risk?

The more the NRA floods the country with guns, the more police believe they are forced into that position.

It's not a binary. Fewer dead unarmed civilians — or even fewer dead  cellphone-wielding menaces — does not mean more dead police.

Of course not -- but you're making a false equivalency. An unarmed civilian is not going to shoot a cop. An armed civilian might.

I repeat the question: if you were a cop, how long would you wait?

I posted to agree with you on the NRA's complicity, and while declining to participate in this tread's exciting new direction, wish the conversation well.

Great point, JB. That's one that isn't covered - easy to say every cop is racist, etc. Definitely racism and poor training involved, but the gun control issue is front and center.

Not a new direction. The same one that's been here for centuries.

And you still haven't answered the question.
